Long distance exes? Do they have a reason to come back?

I have been looking through previous threads and I was just curious about exes that try to reconcile after they broke up with you or you broke up with them and the relationship was always long distance.

My ex and I were always long distance, we started as friends and then after 3 months went to bf/gf. When he broke up with me, we had known each other for 6/7 months at that point, and he "stated" that the distance was too difficult for him and wanted to be able to see me on a regular basis. He told me that he loved me and before we had broken up he would often say how great I was and that I was the only person he wanted to be with and would talk about living together.

However despite saying this, he broke up with me the same week that I was flying to see him for the first time, I still saw him because the trip was paid for and I still feel like we had a connection and I love him despite how he ended the relationship. *He basically hung out with a work friend a couple times who had a crush on him (she is 17 and he is 25) and figured it was easier to date her because she lived closer, but I feel like from what our mutal friend has told me that it feels like just a physical relationship or like a friends with benefits situation where the girl is way more into my ex than he is to her but he is going with it, again, because it's easier and available whenever he wants.*

I know what he did was really horrible, but that's not the main point of my question. If you are long distance (I know Rollercoaster got back with her ex after 4 years of contact) is there anything that makes them want to come back? I feel like he was the one I wanted to be with, and maybe he feels that way too, but it's hard to think that the distance will prevent him from ever wanting to start over. I can't move there, and he can't move here unless we do the fiancee visa so I can't just move closer and see if that would change anything.

Anyone long distance and/or similar reason for breaking up have their ex come back? My ex and this girl have been together for 2 months so far but I'm hoping he'll see that convenience is not necessarily better than what we had just because we couldn't see each other in person every week.

No, I won't "wait" for him, if I find someone I like I'll pursue it but I'm not the type to go "looking" for boyfriends and I'm not going to rebound on some poor guy either.

Thanks for any input.

I don't know if this matters, but another reason that I'm wondering if he will realize how good our relationship was is that so far with his new 17 year old girlfriend he pays for everything and has already spent several hundred pounds on her, she likes to hit him and pull him around a lot like a little kid, and she gets very emotional/insecure about things and even even more so when him and his lesbian friend flirt/joke around (she even threw an orange at his friend because the two of them were flirting).

So I kind of feel like after a few months he would see that his new relationship is really not easier or more convenient for him than he thought it would be.
