Left me and I don't know why.

My English Boyfriend of a year (living in Ireland with me) turned around last week, completely out of the blue, and said he's decided to go back to England. Alone. We are an extremely happy couple and have spoken often about marriage and long term plans.

He has lost his job in the last 3 months and just seems to be stuck in a rut. He can't seem to make friends outside of me or stick to any hobbies. I am his entire world here. I can see the appeal of returning to his old friends and family. I understand his need to go home, but I'm lost as to why he wants to go on his own. I offered to go with him and everything. When he turned me down and I asked him why, he said 'I don't know why I'm doing this. I'm so afraid. It's better to hurt you now rather than later.'

Then he asked me to leave.

I can't tell you how much this has torn my life apart. The really sad part is, this wonderful and kind man, just won't give me any explanation. I wrote to him and told him if he ever changed his mind, he knew where to find me, but no word. It's only been a week, but I think it's a lost cause. I'm just so hoping he'll have a change of heart.

And yes, I realise that the right guy for me would never hurt me like this. And if he truly wanted to be with me, he'd be with me. But we are perfectly suited to one another, and feel like there is more to our story than this. I feel like he is depressed and feeling lost without a goal, so this is his reaction. I honestly feel that if he leaves us like this, it'll be a mistake that will haunt us both. Any advice on what to do, or how to move forward?
