not eat too much on someone else's house?

Well every time my mother and I are invited to another relative's house and are asked ''Would you want some more'' (after we've finished the first plate) my mother always ''No thank you''.

However, my answer is always ''Yes, I would like some more''. One time I was told ''This other plate if for me, you can finish it if you want to'' and that's exactly what I did. I finished it and I eat kind of fast too.

Another thing I noticed my mother doing is she's always going for either the smallest or just a median sized chicken. I go for the biggest one I see because I'm hungry and it's an invitation anyways. But according to my mother, she said what I'm doing isn't ladylike.

When I'm served snacks and get told ''Get some'', I always get a handful. My mother just gets very few.

She used to tell me ''Why can't you act like me, if you keep eating more they're not gonna invite you later on''.

But if I'm invited and there is a lot of food then what's the problem? I like eating well and can't help it. If there is a big steak while the other ones are smaller, I'll take that big one and finish it fast.

its impolite to go for the biggest serving, its impolite to mound the plate up because others have to eat too...its better to eat a small amount chew slowly so that you feel full quicker......small mouthfuls....small amount .....chew longer...and give yrou stomach time to realize yep had enough now...not stoppppppp now you are about to go paint the toilet bowl technicolor......i am the type to wait till others have their plates...but thats me.....i often eat my daughters left overs because they mound their plates when we go out...saves food being wasted.....deb

I got served a small dish on a restaurant once (I was taking my time too) and all it did was left me still hungry. It's like I have some type of large stomach (think I must have expand it over the years that it's like I were eating the same as if it were a 6ft+ man). Edited by samsungxoxo

Yes, stomachs shrink and expand depending how much you eat generally. When I go on a diet and get used to eating a lot less, I am not hungry most of the time and get full very quickly. When I am in “pig mode” and stuff my face with junk food (like I’ve been doing for the past few months, heheh), I am hungry a lot and can eat much bigger portions.

Anyway, I don’t think it’s unladylike to decline to eat as much as you like, no matter where you are. If you’re still hungry and there is more food on offer, accept it! The ladylike aspect is only relevant in cases where you choose to eat politely as opposed to shoveling the food in rudely. And if you demand more food or eat off someone else’s plate. That’s unladylike. Lol.

If you wish to follow etiquette, then your mother's right. It's not considered polite to eat hearty on anyone else's dime, whether at their home or if they're paying for your meal.

What's interesting is that this form of etiquette is for women only. Men are encouraged to eat more since it's a compliment to the "female" cook.
