Do guys go back to girls they used to date? If so, why?

Lets say you dated someone for a few months but were never exclusive. And you broke it off because one of you wasn't ready for a relationship.

Would the guy normally come back to the girl later in life? (I'm talking about 1 year to 3 years later). If so, why do guys do this? Is it because they experienced other women and they just don't compare? Do they truly want to "work things out" this time? Or is it something else?

Has anyone ever been in a situation like this? If so, did it end up working out?

It probably wouldn't work out. I was in a non-exclusive relationship many times, when I would find myself wanting to be with the other person, and also being the one who left. When I leave this person after a few hangouts, I really leave and I don't have intentions of coming back, and when I was left they never came back and we have never spoken after that. It all goes down to using and getting what you want out of the other person, you have no other feelings for them. Also could be that they don't have a connection with you, you just don't click. If two people wanted to be together they would, not leave and come back after experiencing other people.
