sillyanswer Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Is it possible to match up with someone who is on a different plain than you? The answer to the topic question is "yes" but the answer to the question quoted above is also "yes". HTH.
miss_jaclynrae Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Men can go down the socio-economic ladder much easier than women. I sell medical devices in ASC and Acute Care settings. Plenty of guys over 40 in my field have no degree. However, nearly everyone under 40 like me... has a degree in something. Most of us average 120-250k.... which is a wide range, but it really depends on what you sell and to what market. You don't really have a grasp of this yet because you have just been trapped at the bottom in retail, but as you move up the ladder the work decreases. Some weeks I work 60 hours, but other weeks its like 32... and the work itself is really easy. People don't get paid for work... we get paid for skills and responsibility. I totally understand that but that is what I am saying at the bottom of the latter in ANY field you put in the man hours. The main point of my posts was that DJtiesto makes it sound SO damn easy and how he makes SO much money... but then he turns around and says he is in car sales? He was just talking about how he knows guys in car sales who make this and this much but he didn't ONCE use himself as an example even though he loves to use himself in every other post. Kinda fishy. And it stinks.

callingyouuu Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 The answer to the topic question is "yes" but the answer to the question quoted above is also "yes". A very elegant answer to the OP's questions! I think the scam part involves convincing people that taking on huge amounts of debt to finance an education will pay off in the long run. I was fortunate that didn't happen to me. I worked my way through college and went to an in-state school. I know people in their 40's that are still paying off college loans... and I know some people that have told me they never intend to repay. LOL. On average, a college education STILL provides one of the best returns compared to the vast majority of other alternative investments. As always, there are outliers, but it remains a good bet for most. Whether or not it pays off on an individual level depends on some combination of your cost of attendance (private vs. public, available scholarships/aid, etc), your chosen field, and luck. As a whole, it is not a scam. That said, this may not be the case a few decades from now if we can't find a way to corral annual tuition hikes.
TheFinalWord Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 (edited) I totally understand that but that is what I am saying at the bottom of the latter in ANY field you put in the man hours. In my experience, the people that bash education usually don't have one. People with degrees can find fault with the education system, for sure, but USA still has the most desirable colleges and people with a degree have more than likely found some benefit to having the degree. A lot of fields have certifications which you basically need an education to obtain (CPA, JD, etc.). People usually bash whatever thing they don't have: if someone is in good shape, people that aren't will bash it. I can't tell you how many times at the gym someone will come up, "I knew a guy that can bench more than that (paraphrasing)", they always try to find someway to make you feel inferior b/c they feel inferior to you. That's where you just have to have self-confidence and go "okay, that's cool for them". A lot of the guys here that aren't good looking, will blame and shame women "women are shallow". Bashing is usually rooted in jealousy. It is formed from a perceived stressor in our environment (person x has some factor which I do not have; therefore, they are a threat to my advancement and I have to minimize that threat; we live in a society which states I cannot overpower that person so I will have to make them look bad with my words to minimize the threat). A lot of people function from a basis of jealousy when competition is involved (i.e. the market, the dating arena, etc.). Arguing with jealous people is a waste of time b/c it's a state of being that is more comfortable than taking ownership and action to change circumstances. It's self-defeating, but their choice. It's not that easy to get a trajectory of success going. As you have said, there are no short cuts to success. Edited February 11, 2013 by TheFinalWord
Eternal Sunshine Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 I can't even tell you how many times people that typically do not have a bachelors degree have bashed education knowing full well my level of education. While I am open to dating less educated people and wouldn't dream of making them feel bad for not having education, they feel it's completely OK to do it to me. Many men on OLD have done this, typically saying stuff like: my friend John has dropped out of high school and is now a multi-millionaire. Education is a waste of time. Sigh :/ 1
