Eternal Sunshine Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 I am corresponding with a guy on OKC and he opened his message with: What's the tricks ES? WTF does it mean?
Yamcha Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 Why don't you ask him what it means? Hell if I know.
Author Eternal Sunshine Posted February 9, 2013 Author Posted February 9, 2013 Yep, I am going to move on. We are obviously not on the same wavelength.
Author Eternal Sunshine Posted February 9, 2013 Author Posted February 9, 2013 It means you're dealing with a non-native English speaker who has ****ed up the phrase "how's tricks?". Urban Dictionary: How's tricks? Still a weird phrase. You learn something new every day
callingyouuu Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 ... you don't know what the tricks are? :p:p Spoken English for my entire life, and I've never heard of that, either.
TaraMaiden Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 Yep, I am going to move on. We are obviously not on the same wavelength. ...You mean, of course, 'length of wave'...... Seriously? You guys never heard 'How's tricks'...? Common parlance this side of the pond....? Like, "Yo, what's noo....?" 1

Common parlance this side of the pond....? Like, "Yo, what's noo....?" Starting to question whether I'm developing some sort of aphasia... Although I'm also an uncultured American, so that might also explain some of it.
TaraMaiden Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 Anyone else notice the Freudian Slip in the second entry of the 'Urban Dictionary (Monicaelise's link)? To Whit: how's tricks? question one usually asks hookers who "turn tricks." It means how are things? Or how is business? Usually this is said to loose women but the derogatory connotation is usually missed by most. While approaching a hooker on the corner.. "How's tricks?" "none of your damn business, get lots i'm working here" Does she actually mean 'lots'....? 1
SJC2008 Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 They're for the kids! He was trying to stand out! OR what the other poster said about his language.
ascendotum Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 They're for the kids! He was trying to stand out! OR what the other poster said about his language. Bingo. He wanted to stand out in a sea of 'hi there's'. He wanted to pique your interest and it worked. Something qwirky or provocative to get a response. If you think he's alright or what to have fun ES, run with it and reply with something a bit goofy. 'My cat does tricks' or 'I only know cheap tricks' or 'abracadraba disappear now'

Like, "Yo, what's noo....?" Yes, I'm American and I've heard "how's tricks" all my life... I don't know - I would personally find that email kind of funny, but then perhaps I'm easily amused!
Enema Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 A guy I know uses openers that contain a nonsense acronym. The woman is so confused that she invariably replies to ask wtf that means. You get a reply and your foot is in the door. You kinda proved the point - so curious about it you posted on a forum
