A couple of weeks ago I was all excited that I was going to become a speed dating event host... then I read through the 27-page manual the company sent me. Man, they really tie your hands... it's almost as bad as having some boss breathing down your back. So, speed dating is out... then I thought, what am I, nuts??? I can start my own group.

I made a few mental notes of the ways the singles groups in my area fall short. For one thing, I have to drive at least 10 miles to attend any events AT ALL. Not fun.

For another thing, the bar scene and drinking have been done to death, though they suit shallow players and PUAs just fine. Most of those group organizers are way too hung up on how many stars a person gives them (I actually got kicked out of one bar group for giving them only 1 star instead of 5), and a small number of malicious trolls can easily wreck a group like that.

So, I've been doing my homework. Nobody in the area has been hosting any singles events, and I can do that. None of them are having things like costume parties, open-mike nights, hikes, or potlucks, and I can do those, too. I've been asking around, and all of the single people said yes they'd enjoy going to costume parties to meet other singles.

It's possible to do it in a way that people online can't mess with (trolls aren't dumb enough to crash events, LOL)... my friend and neighbor is a musician, he knows a lot about booking events, and he wants to help me host.

At this point, the only real hurdle is hitting the bricks and talking to the managers, then starting the group and getting the word out.

After all, I've seen what doesn't work. That's experience enough.

Say what you want... but the fact is, unless you hit the bricks and make a serious effort to do a little ripdown, you won't be doing much to stop me.
