El Brujo Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 I totally don't get why these 40-60 yo women on OLD say they want to have kids---especially since a lot of these women smoke, AND they think Prince Charming is going to go out to Hillbillyville to rescue them. Apparently they never learned that they're more likely to have a feeb baby the older they are, and smoking f's up the circulation in their uterus anyways. Will someone please point out what I'm just not understanding???

Apparently they never learned that they're more likely to have a feeb baby the older they are, and smoking f's up the circulation in their uterus anyways. Will someone please point out what I'm just not understanding??? I don't particularly fault people -- inherently -- for wanting children at an advanced age. Medical science has made it possible, if one is responsible, to have children at ages not thought of centuries before. I'm aware that complications are more frequent, but those factors are largely out of their control, especially for people who do not marry until they are in their late 30s, for example. It would be like telling a handicapped person that they can't have children because the odds of inheriting whatever disease they have is higher; it's true the chances are higher, but telling people they can't have children because of who they are seems morally repugnant to me. It's eugenics. However, smoking and drinking are not "who you are." They are choices, and we're typically harder on people who make bad choices than we are on people who simply got unlucky by being born with disease or being born in to poverty, and so forth. Obviously smoking and drinking are things we wish we could stop people from doing while pregnant. If you are asking why people still do it when it's clearly a bad idea, you might as well ask why people do anything stupid; because not everyone is perfectly capable and perfectly knowledgeable. Why do people believe the earth is 6000 years old when we have huge amounts of evidence that it's much older? Why do people eat poorly, or do any number of unhealthy things? Answer: because nobody is perfect.
