sagweee Posted August 21, 2004 Posted August 21, 2004 A friend of mine was describing this new trend amoung single men who want to stay single saying they will have women over at their places for a few hous just for sex. Is this type of thing common? I'd never heard of the term before. Where does it come from?
uriel Posted August 22, 2004 Posted August 22, 2004 Is the trend common? Well, more common than some of us might think and not as common as some of us (I'm going to be a bigot and say more men than women) might want. Booty's a slang term for butt -- so a booty call is when a man (usually, but could be a woman, too) calls a butt over to use. That's the idea. Crude, isn't it? It's sex with no strings attached, most common in a friends with benefits type of relationship. No romancing, no money spent, no activities outside of the sack. Unfortunately, in the case of man to woman booty call, the woman often feels an emotional tie to the guy (wishes he would want a relationship or had one with him in the past and can't get over the break-up and move on). This isn't always the case, but it's rarely to her advantage from what I've seen. What's the origin of booty? According to Ask Prudence: "According to Andy Ihnatko, Prudie's favorite go-to guy, here is what we need to know: "The origins of 'booty' go as follows: 1) treasure or valuables, as in pirate booty; 2) those bits of your body that prove most valuable on the dance floor while trying to attract some Hai Karate-wearing gold-chain-sportin' hair-featherin' lothario; 3) the classic anthem of "Shake Your Booty," which caused people to link the term straight to the backside. These days, 'booty' is more of a zone than a specific part." So the, ahem, bottom line is that booty is in the eye of the beholder." Here, btw, is what Berkeley U's online slang dictionary has on Booty: booty n 1. buttocks. ("Check out her booty!") - adj 1. not good, as if from one's butt. ("Man, your lyrics are booty.") Submitted by Brad Sims, Little Rock, AR, USA, 19-11-1997. Here is the UrbanSlang dictionary's definition of booty-call: 1. noun: a person with whom one has sex at random times outside of a relation ship. 2. verb: the act of calling said person. 3. noun: the term used to refer to said phone call. 1. jessica is my boody-call. 2. i booty-called jessica last night. 3. jessica got a booty-call from me last night. -- uriel
reasontosigh Posted August 22, 2004 Posted August 22, 2004 ........2) those bits of your body that prove most valuable on the dance floor while trying to attract some Hai Karate-wearing gold-chain-sportin' hair-featherin' lothario; ........ That is the funniest thing I've read in a while!!!! Trouble is, that really is about all one finds on dance floors around here these days. They still make Hai Karate, eh!?

We each would go out with our respective friends and sometimes they'd call (or me) and one of the two of us would go to the other's house for sex. Mine were never no strings attached. Always someone with whom I had a relationship, contrary to Uriel's quote. They were monogamous ones too.
uriel Posted August 23, 2004 Posted August 23, 2004 Shamen's right to say that some people in relationships use "booty call" to refer to the times they just meet for sex -- I neglected that. However, if someone refers to another as his or her "booty call," then this is outside of a relationship (just using the person for sex). -- uriel
meanon Posted August 23, 2004 Posted August 23, 2004 It's a term that is in fairly common usage. I've only ever heard it said by young women who use it to refer to a 'phone call (to someone who they may or may not be in a relationship with) requesting sex.
Queen B Posted September 7, 2004 Posted September 7, 2004 I really don't think this trend is all that "new" or only among young men as your friend might suggest. I mean I think booty calls have been around for as long as people have been having sex. Now, whether we talk about it is a different story... Among most of my friends guys and girls) the booty call is widely discussed...lots of people don't have the time or energy for a full-on relationship but still enjoy the physical pleasures of the booty call with a person that they know can deliver the sexual goods-Beats the crap shoot of picking up at a club if you ask me. Cheers!
IcedTiger Posted September 7, 2004 Posted September 7, 2004 Bootycall subject, interesting. I've been going out with this girl for 5 months now, and believe or not, it started as a booty call partners. LoL the feeling grew and i am in love with this girl and she's in love with me. Anyone else in the same situation?
uriel Posted September 8, 2004 Posted September 8, 2004 Well, Queen B, historically, women in particular didn't engage in purely sexual relationships widely and randomly because of the consequences. Before birth control or antibiotics etc. for STDs, one had to be careful. Then there was the social stigma -- as vessels of inheriting sons, women had to be kept pure. The women who were promiscuous tended to be of the lower classes and to do it for money -- or some form of support. I'm not saying women never had sex outside of wedlock or that middle and upper class women never had purely sexual relations. Married women did have affairs, and especially in particular cultures (Medieval European cultures, for instance, when marriages were arranged). I'm just saying that the free-for-all booty call among the young in European and American cultures has not been a longterm and prevalent phenomenon historically. It's an aspect of our medically-supported, leisured, late-onset-adult-responsibility youth culture. -- uriel
