I apologize in advance for not reading the whole thread, but here's the obvious solution. Tell them you're using a fake name and you'll give your real name when you feel comfortable enough to move to the phone. You can even make it a game for them to get in on by making up their own alias.

 

This is not the end of the world, but the same reason that you give a fake is the reason she's freaked out that you did.

Whatever your motives, it just looks a bit odd. Generally I agree that it can be a bad idea to put up personal identifying information on the internet but not so much on a dating site. They are for trying to connect with real people in a meaningful manner. And that's not going to happen if the first thing you tell somebody is a lie.

Having a fake name out there would make me think that you are most likely married and trying to hide from your wife.

 

Also, in this day and age woman have to be careful about the people they meet through the Internet and there is no guarantee that you are even giving your real name when you say that you are.

 

I really doubt someone wants to steal your indentity, from using your first name or otherwise.

 

Why hide? What is wrong with your name floating around potential partners.

 

If one isn't into you, she can pass your name to a friend so long as you are upfront weird by doing things like offering a fake name.
