I also agree that cutting one's hair often does have an aging effect. My face is already doing enough of that. I think a nice, long soft style keeps me from falling too far into the "hard, old woman" zone (it's also a whole lot easier to maintain and deal with day-to-day...if it gets in my way, I just pull it up). Also, as a semi-giantess I just feel more feminine with hair that is "to scale". This isn't going to be the case for everyone.

Letting your hair grow can have an aging affect too. It depends on the person and the health of their hair and the color of their hair and the shape of their face. I often see women of a certain age with long, brittle looking hair, and think how much better they'd look if they cut all that crap off.

I also often see women in their 20s who still look like they have the long shapeless style of an early teenager. Not that they have to cut their hair short, but there comes a time when women need to update their look so they appear more put together and their style looks more intentional.

I agree completely. You have to go with what works for you. :)

Some men like short hair. Some men like smaller breasts.

It's like how most women might prefer tall dark and handsome men. And how other women prefer tall blond and blue eyed men.

I didn't say no men like short hair. Of course some do. And some have no preference. But you will rarely meet a man who DISLIKES long hair, more likely to find them prefering long hair ime.

Every bf I've had, when I contemplate cutting my hair they are like NOOOOOOO. My hair used to go to my hips, now it goes halfway down my back. I LOVE long hair.

I'm a woman, but in the world I live in (designers, artists etc) most men think women with shorter, edgy haircuts are super sexy.

I think preppy men are more into Barbie like long hair. As I'm not into preppy men or that kind of culture, I'm happy with having shoulder length hair.

I also think long hair looks a bit pathetic on women over 30. It suits teenagers better.

preppy men and Barbie hair? lol. Okay. I didn't know that long hair = a certain "culture" ?

I will be 30 in April...I sure hope I don't look pathetic...sheesh.

I personally think short hair is aging. But maybe that is because my mother has had short hair for as long as I can remember

I've never been a fan of short hair on women.

Just is not appealing to me. Long hair is much more attractive.

let me translate what I meant by pathetic (maybe I used too harsh of a word) in the words of more articulate pteromom:

I do agree that after a certain age you have to reevaluate your hair style, and wear your hair in accordance with your age. that's all.

edit: of course urban areas have different subcultures and these have different hair styles and dress codes: preppy people, goths, society women, designers, nerds, hippie style girls... do they all have the same style? I don't think so. in my area the more preppy and hippie style girls are the ones who have long hair.

I think only women look at long hair on women over 40 and think it looks bad. As long as the hair is healthy and shiny, of course. Kyle's is gorgeous!

I have short hair in a similar style to that of Annie Lennox. I have not had a problem attracting a man. My husband loves my hair. Friends love my hair.

I really love short hair, I think I like it more than long hair, on women. It seems much more dynamic, and just is generally really pretty.

I especially like it when they rock it like

. I don't know. Short hair on girls has just always seemed really fresh and fun to me c:

My hair is longer than hers....

Was your hair always that short?

I'm female and I prefer longer hair in MEN. LOL How about that? ;)

(Men worn their hair long for millennia. Native Americans, Vikings, Chinese, Persians, Scots, French, Englishmen and so many others... So I find it strange that long hair in men is now associated with femininity when the most brutal of warriors wore long hair so proudly...)

No, not like that... her hair is pretty.

Here's an example of what I mean...

Before, her hair looks blah and like she's not trying. Afterward, both the cut and color flatter her. The hair is still long, but it's a huge improvement.

Or this...

Cut off a couple inches and warm up the color, and she looks great.

I think they both look better in the before....especially the second woman.

What do I know. I'm just a hippie :p

Neither girl looks better in the before. The first girl looks WAY better in the after...the 2nd one is negligible.

You hippie! :p

I, for one, love women with short hair. I on the subway the other day, sitting across this girl my age who had this very short, wavy haircut. Her hair was like an inch above her eye brows. It went very well with her overall style of dress. She was incredibly pretty. I was trying to look for an "in" to strike up a convo, too bad she was glued to her damn phone!

Besides, short hair on women goes well with me. I now proudly wear long hair, badass hair.

I think it was seen as manly back then because they didn't have the tools to cut or style their hair. It grew out because they couldn't cut it or do anything to it. Now, if you're a man with long hair, you have to take care of it, use product, etc etc for it to look presentable, and that can be seen as somewhat feminine.

I used to have very shot hair. Similar to what Eminem has now. But this past year, seeing all these killer hair styles in GQ and Esquire, I felt mine was plain and somewhat immature looking (almost every teenager has the short hair look) so I grew it out and wear it like Adam Levine. It takes work to manage it but I think it pays off. I look older, or at the very least, my age (25). I'm also surprised how much a good head of hair makes a difference. I really think good hair can bump you up a full point on the attraction scale.

Oh I assure you they had ALL the tools available. LOL

In addition, in some Native American tribes, WOMEN were the ones that had to cut their hair short while the men had it long.

I remember reading somewhere that the "fashion" of men starting to cut their hair very short started by the time of the World Wars. The soldiers had to cut their hair extremely short so the wouldn't get tangled in the enemies' wires as they crawled under them!

I usually have very short hair for a woman. I have good bone structure and being a hair styist I got amazing haircut for free every two weeks. I did my own color. Blonde, purple, pink. Badass.

I actually prefer men with beards. But long hair is great.

If a woman looks good with short hair chances are she's genuinely gorgeous. There is nothing to hide behind.

Also makeup is a different game with short hair.

I love short bob style cuts. Bangs long hair on back of neck shorter layered some

Buy a wig and see what happens.

I think a lot of older women do themselves a disservice when they chop their hair short...especially Ellen Degeneres style. I can understand that their hair is not as luxurious as it once was due to hormone changes, but I think many underestimate how much it can enhance their femininity when they get older, especially when they chunk up and also wear frumpier style clothing. I've suggested it to a couple of women (subtly), and it didn't go down well (ie I wear it to make it easier for me and I'm sick of having to go to the extra trouble just to please men...had longer hair in my 20s, been there done that, type response). Really the ideal way to know how much of an impact it has on your attractiveness to men, would be to wear a wig for a month or change your pic on OLD to one with a wig, and just see.

For women, short hair is definitely not a dating failure, but it does depend on the woman..along the lines what MrCastle wrote. OP, if its only your female friends who say how much they love your short hair style, and not your bf or other male co-workers, well don't use them as your indicator you are on a good thing. If they were really jealous, its not that hard for them to get it chopped. You are asking us here...but I get the impression like you feel short hair is not helping your prospects..true?

FitChick...have you ever worn a wig?

No, I used to have very long and curly hair. Yet, the upkeep is a pain in the arse. I was tempted for many years to cut it really short. I am thrilled I did!

I think the Roman's were unarguably the greatest military force of its time, for a very long time. They conquered everything. They were well beyond everyone else, including all the long haired nancy-boys that you listed. Also, they were the first to have their soldiers maintain short hair. In battle, having long hair gives your opponent something to grab on to that will be easily painful for you. Most military forces, copied the Romans on a lot of things.
