You may have an opportunity to exchange glances and provide a quick flirt, but it's really hard to when you've got a line forming behind you or there's other people to serve.

They usually are REQUIRED to be friendly and flirty with you...so they don't appreciate anyone who makes them do that. Really it's just a bad idea to ask someone working out. Maybe invite them to a social event later...but speaking as an ex barista, lots of people flirted with us and we flirted back for tips. Not much else. 1

He kept chatting her up, slowly building, then eventually asked her out. They dated, got married and now have kids. So, it can happen. It comes down to attraction and the man having the balls to ask the girl out.
