Asking a friend to set me up with his friend vs just asking out through facebook?

Okay, so in the next week or two I'm gonna jump back into the dating game. There is one woman who I've only met a couple of times through mutual friends over the last few years, but she always left a very strong impression on me and I developed a small crush on her.

 

Since we never really saw each other and were only facebook friends I never made the plunge as the idea of asking her over facebook seemed "lame" (for lack of a better word), but now I approach it as, what is the worst that can happen?

 

So one of her best friends, is one of my good friends. I'm thinking of asking him to set us up, tell her something like that he has a friend that he think would be good for her and then we meet and see if anything happens.

 

Or should I skip the middle man and just send her a facebook message, something along the lines of "hey, we share a mutual good friend (insert name), and I've met you once or twice and you always grabbed my interest and I would like to grab a cup of coffee with you sometime"?

 

Is one way better than the other?

I would think the first approach, using a close mutual friend, would be a better option. If I was a woman, and a close friend made a specific referral to a potential date, I'd want to meet them.

 

The first option would feel safer, more comfortable, and a higher chance of a connection. Your friend can obviously "hype" you up in a good way without seeming over the top. Then, as you already stated, see what happens upon meeting.
