pink_sugar Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 Just curious for those of you who are working or have worked a second job and how you've gone about landing one. Do you tell your current employer that you're looking for a second job and that you will need to restrict your availability to certain set hours, or do you find another job with opposite hours so that there is no conflict? It seems challenging, especially with retail jobs, because you'd have to limit your availability at each one so they do not overlap and I've known people who's hours get cut quite a bit due to the above...defeating the purpose of getting a second job. I work business hours so if I did land a second job, it wouldn't be challenging as I have set hours and would just need to tell the new employer I'd work nights and weekends. In all honesty, I'd prefer one full time job instead of two part time, but we'll see.
UpwardForward Posted December 11, 2012 Posted December 11, 2012 I wouldn't discuss it w your current employer unless there's an interview that comes up that's only available during bus hrs, that you must take off work for. See what's out there, and upon genuine interest from potential employer, then you can figure how to juggle - and to discuss with your current boss. I started real estate, got cold feet after 4 months, then jumped into night shift of hospital admitting for revenue. It was full time night shift and eventually drained me toward wanting to do much more than shop and make dinner each day. Discovering an interest and starting your own company (with nothing more than flyers/bus cards) is another way to supplement your current income. I heard on the radio today of a temps employment agency boasting they are busier this year. (didn't get the name of the agency). But this would be a good time to begin temp holidays' employment. If they like you they would encourage you to stay.
