BetheButterfly Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Hello, Even though I'm not Jewish, I greatly respect the Jewish people, including their ancestors - Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Israel). Many of my all-time heroes of the past are Jewish people, including Joseph - one of the sons of Jacob, Moses - who put up with a lot of whining, Deborah (a Jewish lady who was a Judge), Abigail - one of King David's wives, King David, King Solomon, and of course, Mary, Joseph, and Jesus!!! Now, some rude people seem to think that the ancestors of a people group are myths. That would be like saying my ancestors are myths, which clearly is not the case since I'm real. Well, the Jewish people are real too. Unlike my ancestors who did not keep great tabs as to our ancestry line (though one of my great uncles is working on researching our line), the Jewish people have for the most part done an awesome job in recording their ancestry and the accounts about their Patriarchs. One of the most important things in Judaism is that God called Abraham, the main Patriarch, you could say, of Judaism, and told him to go a land He promised him and his ancestors. God then reiterated the promise to Isaac (Abraham's son with his wife Sarah) and to Jacob and his sons (Judah, one of his sons, is from where the name Judaism is derived... King David is from the tribe of Judah). Even though the children of Israel moved to Egypt due to famine, God brought the children of Israel out of Egypt and eventually, back to the land He had promised Abraham would be for his descendants. In many of the Jewish festivals, the ancestors of the Jewish people are remembered and celebrated. Hanukkah or Chanukah is one such festival!!! Again, even though I'm not Jewish, I really appreciate learning about Jewish beliefs, since Jewish beliefs are the foundation of my beliefs: Christianity - following Jesus Christ, a Jewish man who I believe is the Son of God. I love the following site which tells more about Chanukah. It is interesting to me how it centers around rebuilding the temple after it was destroyed by the Greeks. (Why are different people groups always trying to destroy Israel???) It is also interesting how this festival was set up way after the Jewish Bible was compiled together into one book. Chanukah FAQs - Chanukah Basics - Chanukah - Hanukkah So, if you celebrate Hanukkah, what do you like about it? I love Adam Sandler's song! Adam Sandler - Hanukkah Song - YouTube To all who celebrate Hanukkah (which starts soon), HAPPY HANUKKAH! It'd be awesome to read a blog or article about celebrating Hanukkah, if you would like to share it!!! 1

It was winter, and Jesus was in the temple courts walking in Solomon’s Colonnade. The Jews who were there gathered around him, saying, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.” Great video: A few years ago, I had the opportunity to talk with a Jewish Rabbi about a lot of topics. Wow, so interesting. So much in their culture impacts the stories of the bible in a way that is very foreign to our Westernized perceptions. Edited December 8, 2012 by TheFinalWord 1

Thanks for sharing! Yeah, in Christian American culture, we don't know very much about Judaism, but it's good to learn! I'm listening to the youtube now. It's very interesting. 1

pie2 Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 Very cool! Jesus celebrated Hanukkah That is so cool!! I love the story of the miracle of the oil, and what the menorah represents Plus, I think menorahs are pretty
Author BetheButterfly Posted December 10, 2012 Author Posted December 10, 2012 That's a very powerful video. That's how empires seem to be formed, by invading other lands. Personally, I wonder if that's why Jesus did not teach his apostles to kill but rather to love, since invading and killing just becomes a horrible cycle of bloodshed and murder? It's awesome when people can come together and live together, instead of conquering and killing each other. As for how this video is connected to Hanukkah, it is because the Isarelites had to rebuild after the Greeks invaded Israel, before the Romans did?
Author BetheButterfly Posted December 10, 2012 Author Posted December 10, 2012 (edited) My mom used to sing me this song I like that song! Happy Hanukkah to everyone celebrating!!! Shalom! Edited December 10, 2012 by BetheButterfly 1
Nightsky Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 As for how this video is connected to Hanukkah, it is because the Isarelites had to rebuild after the Greeks invaded Israel, before the Romans did? That video isn't really connected to Hanukkah that much you were just talking about all the fighting in Israel. Though I'm pretty sure the part where you see all the guys with Hebrew Hammers is the Jewish revolt which gets celebrated as Hanukkah.

It's so sad how people and empires have invaded and conquered each other. I really wish people would just agree to live together, and agree to disagree, without being mean to each other or killing each other. The following is very interesting:

The video you sent me talks about how the Greeks were intent on destroying Jewish culture mind and body. Some times reality means you have to fight for what you want. It's a matter of self defense. Your body doesn't just let the germs take over it fights. Freedom isn't free, it takes people willing to stand up for their rights and back that up.

Your body doesn't just let the germs take over it fights. Freedom isn't free, it takes people willing to stand up for their rights and back that up. The Greek Empire seemed to want to take over a lot of people's cultures, same as the Roman Empire. I don't really get why we (humankind) need empires, you know? Alexander the Great, for example, seemed to love conquering people. Why is that??? Engineering an Empire - Greece in the Age of Alexander - YouTube Anyways, I understand about self-defense. It is very important to protect one's family and friends, because sad to say there are people who do not love and/or respect others. I agree the freedom isn't free. As for Hanukkah, I am glad that the Jewish people rebuilt the temple and have survived so much in their history. I am not glad about all the suffering they have endured. I think it's shameful how people around the world have treated Jewish people (and other groups of people... for example, the Turkish treatment of the Armenians -genocide- as well as European immigrants' treatment of Native Americans and people from Africa, India, and the aborigines in Australia, as well as the Chinese and Former USSR governments' treatment of people who disagree with them for whatever reason.) I really wish that people would just simply stop attacking each other and hating each other or thinking they are superior to others. Wouldn't that be awesome? One thing I am curious about... I have tried to find info on a "Jewish Empire." Has there ever been such a thing? There is a British/English Empire and an Arab Empire (both like in some ways the Greek and Roman Empires), as well as there was a Persian Empire. Was there a Jewish Empire? The following is very interesting, about King Cyrus the Great, of the Persian Empire, and how he treated the Jewish people, as well as other people who were conquered. This was way before the time of Hanukkah though, but wow, is really cool concerning freeing people! Edited December 10, 2012 by BetheButterfly
BlueStone Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 I'm sorry, I couldn't resist to share the real story of Hanukkah:) Geeky Humor / The cell phone only had enough battery power for one day but it lasted eight days 1
BlueStone Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 "One thing I am curious about... I have tried to find info on a "Jewish Empire." Has there ever been such a thing?" Not very much into ancient history but try Land of Israel, Kingdom of Israel or Kingdom of Judah.

Author BetheButterfly Posted December 13, 2012 Author Posted December 13, 2012 I wish my cell phone could last for 8 days on its charge! Cell phones were probably self-charging back in the ancient times:D Lol! I don't know how people could live without cell phones... or computers... or the Internet!!! I can't imagine how hard life was back then. One of my favorite series is by Laura Ingalls Wilder. She describes life in the olden days where women seemed to cook and work hard all day. The men worked really hard too, from sunup to sundown. I think it'd be good for people nowadays to experience that... for a week!!! Many people forget what hard work really means. I wonder if I could survive doing all that Laura Ingalls Wilder's Mom did??? Oh I absolutely adore the Maccabeats!!! They have a newer song for Hanukkah: Shine, which is so beautiful!!!
Author BetheButterfly Posted December 14, 2012 Author Posted December 14, 2012 The Maccabeats have another song, done a year ago, about Hanukkah! It's an awesome one too!!! My Dad would love this group; he adores a capella groups!!!
