I am applying for work online. I want to make myself stand out from others. I want to call on jobs to set up interviews. I want to show I have ambition but dont want to be a nuisance either. (These are average jobs, not executive level) Some lower managerial and others just part of a team or a lead.

My question is how many days would you recommend waiting before I call?

My thoughts are

1-2 days = too soon Can I call on 1 or 2 days of first submitting resume/app?

3 days= want to, possible?

4-7= Definitely call by one week

One job I called 10 days later and a manager took a message for the person in charge of interviews...

Another, I left name and phn with an employee b/c manager wasnt there. I think I made an error and should I call back to speak to her now that I know her name? I was thrown off when the other lady said can I help you? When I should have just left it alone and called the next day. :(

What are your thoughts on my thoughts?

Thank you so much! :D

Once you've submitted your application, in theory you don't have to call, they call you, but it's not a bad idea to call and try to make yourself familiar to them.

Bear in mind that the person answering the phone is unlikely to have any decision-making power over your application. However, they do have the power to mention you called and to pass on a brief message. I would advise you be very pleasant to the person answering the phone and be cheerful, upbeat but not pressurising. If you do well, they will mention to their boss that one of the candidates called and he/she seemed really nice. That person will also make sure your CV doesn't get missed out of the pile to be looked at.

As for time to call, I would suggest about two to three days before the deadline. If you call too early, it's long enough to forget. If you call after the deadline, they won't want to discuss your application until the selections have been made. If you call just before the deadline, the staff will probably be rushed getting the applications together for the selectors.

Having an unusual or interesting hobby on your CV won't go amiss, but be careful what it is and that it doesn't get you noticed for the wrong reasons.

Good luck!
