My boyfriend of 5 months (an intense 5 months) recently broke up with me out of the blue. For the last 2 months, he had been under a ton of pressure from work and worked 7 days a week. It put a strain on our relationship, but we were really happy before so I figured it would get better when we stopped working. He broke up with me 3 weeks before his job went back to normal.

He had never told me before anything was wrong, but he said he wasn't sure if he loved me and he felt in his gut it wasn't right. He said he had really really strong feelings for me and told me he will be second guessing himself for a long time, saying I am smart and beautiful and maybe he's too immature and stupid. He admitted he didn't know if it was related to work stress or not.

He agreed with me that he should've spoken to me about this to try to find a compromise or solution, rather than just giving up without trying to fux us. But he still stuck with his decision. He was crying during all this and I said goodbye, he told me he is not going to say goodbye to me, that it is too hard and he cares about me so much, but he's confused.

He texted me a lot after, being flirty and overly nice, but I told him we couldn't be friends. He got very very upset but I told him I couldn't be friends with him right now. He texted me once since (2 days ago) to let me know he was near my office building, to which I responded "cool."

I miss him so much and he's an amazing guy. We had complete trust and he treated me so well. I honestly think our connection weakened because of the stress he was under and because we both were not good at communicating. I just want him back.

that's not mixed signals. that's him dumping you nicely because he doesn't want to be in a relationship with you. of course he's texting you and flirting because he's likely hoping to continue sleeping with you without the formality of "being in a relationship".
