I have oral herpes and I wouldn't bring it up. I wouldn't even think to bring it up. I've had it my entire life. Also it isn't obvious when it happens since it only shows up inside my mouth.

But did you test your boyfriend before you kissed him? That is the point. Unless you are sleeping with your friend or kissing her or sharing drinks and utensils with her it is irrelevant.

Its relevant because the point is I do not have any type of herpes. I was just mentioned my friend so I could say why I went and got tested. I didn't test my boyfriend before we got together. I just can't see what the big deal is about someone not wanting to date someone with oral herpes.

"him: that is gross I can't believe so and so has herpes"

THIS is what bothers me the most. When he's a doctor is he going to be spewing the same judgment on his patients?

I get a cold sore once a year, in the same spot, every year. It's usually gone within a few days. I cannot for the life of me imagine dating someone who would say I was "gross" or that he "couldn't believe" I get a cold sore.

Gimme a break.

Because it is like saying I won't ever date someone who had chicken pox.

It is nothing like that. Yes, I know chicken pox is a form of herpes, but people don't get flare ups of chicken poxs. Also, according to my micro teacher, web md, and my doctor, it is possible to spread oral herpes to the genital area. It may be rare, but it CAN happen....

This sounds like canker sores and they aren't contagious.

It is just something so minor to eliminate such a big group of people for. I mean I don't think anyone goes out and seeks people to date who have herpes, but if I met a guy and liked him a lot him telling me he has Type 1 herpes, which like 60% of people have, is not going to be a deal breaker.

I've never had chicken pox. Maybe that sets me above and apart from the rest of you. :D

Chicken pox often flares up again, as shingles.

Looking at it it probably is. I was always told it was a cold sore and I got it from my mother who got it as a kid. I've been recently beginning to suspect I am allergic to cow's milk and it seems there is a strong correlation between canker sores and such an allergy.

Maybe or maybe you could still get it. Can't remember if that is worse as an adult.

I thought shingles was rare and usually occurred due to a compromised immune system.

Then don't get oral. Problem solved.

Haha...yeah no thanks. I think I'll just stay with my herpes free boyfriend.

Shingles is common enough in older adults that vaccinations are given to people over a certain age (60 I think).

All herpes outbreaks generally come at a time when the immune system is weak. Otherwise, there would be no outbreaks, and often there aren't. Many people have type 1 and/or 2 without knowing it because they never have symptoms. I read that it's thought up to 80% don't know they have type 2. This was really surprising to me, but also made me less fearful of it. I had always pictured disgusting oozing sores all the time, which isn't the case.

Nearly 100% of humans, upon death, will have some form of herpes.

It can happen to anyone that has been infected by chicken pox once before. Some people might be naturally incapable of being infected just as some people can't be infected by HIV and get AIDS.

El, your bf seriously has the maturity of a child. The way he handles conflict is really obnoxious and i don't think it'll ever change.

I am seriously considering breaking but but its hard. I know my reasons for not doing them are not the right ones...

I just can't handle a breakup right now.

I am in the middle of interview season for my residency.

I have a test in 2 weeks that I need to prepare for.

I am away from home

I don't know how I am going to handle that right now

I'm scared of being seen as having another failed relationship

Breaking up with someone who doesn't make you happy is not a failure.

It's a success. And paves the way for you to find true happiness with someone else who's not all "Omg EWWWWW HERPES!" then ignores you.

I mean seriously? Is he 12?

Are you trying for match in same city as BF?

Watch him fall in love with a girl with herpes. always happens when they say... I WILL NEVER... yea yea yea. herpes aint that bad. try having aids or syphilis. he is a DOUCHE.

It's not a mortal sin. Just kind of weird since he's supposed to know a lot about biology since he's going into medicine. I wouldn't be so quick to pull the trigger unless he's got another problem. If this is the only issue it can be worked out.

I just don't want him practicing any kind of important medicine...

This is the problem with the general population...they think doctors are gods or saints or something.

There were people in my med school class that didn't believe in evolution, who ate texas toast every day, were homophobes, who womanized, etc.

Doctors are just people....a lot of what you know doesn't get applied to your life.
