ARDriver01 Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 I'm dead serious. Our longtime friends have let us go because my wife and I are voting for Romney this election. What's weird is that I've been very under-the-radar with political chit chat, especially around THEM because they've been SO verbal in their "Collective" distain the last 2 months. I mean, I haven't been out there saying stuff like "Well IIII think this, and IIIII think that, etc..." I have tried very hard to be extremely low key. I always suspected them of being very partisan and entirely "group think" but I never thought they were THIS bad. Now that election night is nearing, they've decided to drop us from the group. I was never in the "group". They've always known that I was relatively conservative (we are aligned on social issues) but now that my wife has changed her views they've decided to distance themselves from us. What's more disturbing is that we have intel alerting us that they have attempted to recruit others in their distain for our 2012 decision. Has everyone lost their minds?
OpenBook Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 Your friends certainly seem to have lost theirs. That's cold. 2
Pyro Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 Anyone who places the value of friendship on party affiliation deserves to be left alone and not have any friends. They did you and your wife a favor. 7

Author ARDriver01 Posted October 29, 2012 Author Posted October 29, 2012 I kind of percieve this reactionary partisanism as a vindicated win.
Citizen Erased Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 They're nuts, seriously. What a ridiculous reason to end a friendship. 3
EasyHeart Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 Where I live, it's pretty much a crime to vote for a Republican. There have been lots of reports of houses and cars being vandalized for sporting Romney signs. The big surprise for Democrats is going to come on election day. I don't think they have any idea of what is coming. . . .
Pyro Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 The big surprise for Democrats is going to come on election day. I don't think they have any idea of what is coming. . . . You are correct. Obama's margin of victory will be larger than any of us expected. That will be a big surprise. 2
kristen73 Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 I'm really sorry to hear that. Normal people aren't like that. Could it be because you live in Southern California?
Robert Z Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 I kind of percieve this reactionary partisanism as a vindicated win. Sure you're not partisan. But I agree that dumping friends over a vote for Romney is stupid. I dumped a lifelong friend over politics and his drinking problem. So not the same thing. He would get drunk, fixate on politics, and became a total ass with an IQ of 50. I couldn't stand one more blathering round of "Obama is a socialist, Muslim terrorist born in Kenya who never did anything but community organizing while working with the black militia run by Rev Wright". 2
dreamingoftigers Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 I have been unfriended on Facebook for supporting Obama. Weird thing too.... Last night I was banned off of a Facebook page for saying I was a Mormon and that in my ten years there the church has not shown me any racism or racist ideas. In fact they have preached about inclusion much like the Democratic Party. Then the mod swore at me a bunch saying my church was "pathetic." it was all BS, I didn't know what I was talking about and that we force baptisms on people like some kind of baptism imperialists. Then they banned me. It was really nuts. Plus clearly even if my church was a bunch of racist psychos, I've been on the page supporting Obama for months. clearly I didn't have a crazy-racist KKK-loving agenda; duh! Although it really irked me that they started attacking Romney (or ANYONE) based on religion. The mayor of my city is Muslim. He was listed as one of the "most trusted" public figures in the country. The mayor to the city north of us is a Jew. Both mayors have worked together in areas benefitting the province. Who cares? No one needs to be a jackass while working with the public. That's not what they are there for. 3
freestyle Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 I still remember how I felt when I found out that a coworker, who I considered to be good friend, was in fact a staunch Bush supporter. (Bush Sr.) I was surprised, and disappointed--briefly. I weighed it against all of her other qualities as a friend, and decided it wasn't enough to "sour the milk" for me. And I maintained the friendship, we just avoided discussing politics. I bristle at anyone trying to hard-sell me their point of view on politics, or religion--it makes me feel disrespected. I've had a few people in my life get too pushy with that, and I've weeded them out of my life. I respect everyone's right to worship (or not) as they see fit, and have their own philosophies regarding politics----and I expect to treated the same. So, it was uncool of your friends to drop you like that, OP. 2
TigerCub Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 Well Op, I hope you learned your lesson. That's what you get for Flaunting your Filthy Republican leanings Next time, you best be ashamed and closeted when it comes to your beliefs and thoughts in order to keep these enlightened and fantastic friends around. Awesomeness like theirs don't come around every day ya know. Class dismissed! 2
serial muse Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 They're nuts, seriously. What a ridiculous reason to end a friendship. Seconded. Bleargh to your former so-called "friends."
AlexDP Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 They're nuts, seriously. What a ridiculous reason to end a friendship. Is it? If you're in a system with 15 different parties, then voting one party won't alienate you from your friends. But if it's either one party or the other.. Let's just say that Democrats and Republicans have a very different set of ideals. I can see how this can stand in the way of friendship. With all that being said, it's still a bit odd.
Hawaii50 Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 So pathetic, I'd be laughing my ass off though, at their ridiculousness. I couldn't help but confront them, really, if just for my own personal entertainment.. but i'm sort of sick like that.
whichwayisup Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 Some people are way too passionate and have a bible thumping attitude when it comes to politics, it's their opinion that right and their opinion that counts - Anybody who doesn't agree with them, can go suck an egg. Your friends have their heads up their asses. Their loss, not yours. 2

Author ARDriver01 Posted October 30, 2012 Author Posted October 30, 2012 Some background : My wife took a trip with her gfs to Disney Land, they stayed at the hotel and had a few drinks. The girls wanted to catch the 2nd debate, my wife wasn't thrilled she asked if they could do something else. The girls started asking why she didn't want to talk politics, she dodged, she said "look we just got back from Disney Land, can't we do other stuff?", they wouldn't let up. They asked her who she was voting for, she said Romney. Next thing you know, they're asking her about gay marriage, two of them had had abortions in college and started crying. Her bf said that now that my wife is a Christian, she thought she was being secretly judgmental and though she was going to hell...another girl said she looked like an ******* now like, "look what you did.." she tried to leave and get a cab to a motel 6, they met her downstairs and said "don't leave, we just think it would be best if you came back upstairs and EXPLAINED YOURSELF."
EasyHeart Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 Sigh. This is why women shouldn't be allowed to vote. Jes sayin'. 1

Eternal Sunshine Posted October 31, 2012 Posted October 31, 2012 Well, I ditched this dude, third date in, when he told me that if he lived in US he would vote for Romney
Emilia Posted October 31, 2012 Posted October 31, 2012 Sigh. This is why women shouldn't be allowed to vote. Jes sayin'. You think only women do this???? A male friend recently (last week) stopped talking to me because I joined the police and he thinks that makes me a fascist! I mean I do laugh at the 'occupy' movement but that's because of their age and I think they are naive, not because I'd want to ban it or anything like that. 1
venusianx13 Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 (edited) I'm voting third party... Don't say a word to them (your ex friends)...they aren't worth it. However, that said, I am careful about waving political flags, and don't really have any inclination to, because I honestly find faults with both sides. I did, however, once sign a petition and it posted to my facebook timeline...it was an ethics issue that struck me as being absurd... and shortly thereafter, I found myself with a few less "friends." Really... if I'm not allowed to voice my opinion in accordance with my moral standings on issues, then they did me a favor. (oh, and they were fellow Buddhists, too...) verhrzn Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 I had friends who told me they were voting Romney, even though he belongs to a party that denies gays the rights to vote, won't shut up about how women shouldn't be allowed abortions even in the case of rape, how women should really stop complaining about rape anyway because God meant for it to happen, who call women that take birth control pills "whores" and demand that contraception not be covered under health insurance plans (even though Viagra is), and who still won't shut up about how Obama wasn't born in America and is totally a Muslim Communist Socialist. In other words, if my friends are voting for Romney, who espouses these points, they must have absolutely no respect for my sexual health, the rights of consenting adults, and, ya know, facts (Communist Socialist. Someone please, please, explain how that works.) Since I am try not to be friends with idiots, I drop them as well.
