Leegh Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 Does anyone have any thoughts on why it can take so long (sometimes years) to fall out of love? Obviously, it is activity with the chemicals in the brain, but does anyone know what changes are taking place with the chemicals in the brain when falling out of love? Are they gradually decreasing when one starts to get over a love interest? It's amazing to me that it can take so long to get over someone!
january2011 Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 From memory based on prior research on this topic, yes and no. There are some chemicals like oxytocin that have been linked to feelings of love but I think it's got more to do with the neural pathways that were set up when you created memories around your ex. With time and NC, those memories (and thus those pathways) are not accessed as much and therefore they "fade" and they do not create such a strong emotional reaction anymore. 1
mammasita Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 I dont think falling out of love has anything to do with a lack of chemicals. Falling out of love is a choice. Sure, the intense emotions that we feel at first simmer down but from where Im sitting it seems like people that "fall out of love" are choosing to direct their energy elsewhere and not towards rekindling/sustaining the love they have. 1
carhill Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 I found lactic acid to work pretty well when 'getting over' an emotional trauma, like falling out of love due to abandonment or rejection. Its 'burn' distracted the neural pathways from accessing the 'love' feelings, as well is its impetus, marathon exercise, stimulated serotonin production connected to a completely different activity from loving someone, creating new and healthier emotional memories. Eventually, everything balanced out. Interesting experiment. 2
carhill Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 According to a local lady who used it effectively on her husband, hydrochloric acid works pretty good too, especially if dipping one it it
threebyfate Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 Are you asking about post breakup or when people fall out of love within relationships until they stop caring enough to break up?
carhill Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 I think.. you're thinking sulfuric. Lactic acid happens when you physically exert muscle fibers- work-out. I'm going to pretend you meant this Yeah, that's what we thought but it proved to be different, actually a mix, but concentrated hydrochloric was the dominant chemical. I work with sulfuric/muriatic. She was pretty smart. Ate him almost to nothing. Chemically, she had the superior mind, as she was a successful chemist. Now she resides in a local prison for the rest of her life. For some people, falling out of love can be a difficult process. Myself, I was recounting the process of falling out of love with a long-ago serious chemical attachment; almost obsessive. The lactic acid/serotonin emotional memory trick was what flipped the switch that allowed me to move on. I imagine everyone's brain chemistry and psychological makeup is different, so IMO it's best to try different things and evaluate the results. While M, I also saw signs of this, beginning to exercise more when I felt abandoned. Perhaps an old tape was playing, though it didn't occur to me at the time. I do recall stating in MC that my love died 'one day at a time' and that chemical process could have been helped by the chemical release I described, IDK.
