Just a quick question:

I recently resigned from my job and my family is operating from my husband's pay check as well as a lump sum that my job gave me after 7 years of working there. My husband's mom just revealed that she needs to have surgery, due to a growth they found on her liver. Hubby wants to buy a plane ticket and fly over to be with her, even though technically, we cannot afford it. On top of this, the whole family will be traveling to see his mother and father for Thanksgiving in a couple of weeks.

I want to be supportive and I do understand but what should I do? (I am the financier of the family).

'Over there'..... let's put a number to that.

I can fly to Europe or Asia from Cali for 600-800 bucks if I call a consolidator this morning.

Does H already have his tickets to visit at Thanksgiving? If so, he can change the dates for a modest fee, pending availability. Also, he can inquire about a partial or full fee waiver due to medical emergency.

If mom's 'growth' on her liver is cancer, she's in a serious way. It's important. I'd take a hard look at options to get him there. If it were my exW and her mother, I'd be on the phone right now and it would be done. There's always a way. Good luck and best wishes to his mother for a positive outcome.

I agree with this. This is health we're talking about, not just "a time away". If you already have the tickets, you might want to change the date (if possible) If it's not, is it any way you can pay the new ticket in parts with your credit card?

And if it was your Mother or loved one, how would you feel about it? would still be calculating costs?

Personally, if you can't afford a (1) plane ticket across a country, you're already in financial disrepair and probably shouldn't be taking family vacations to begin with.

Thanksgiving is a bit over 4 weeks away; that is a long time. I personally would suck up the costs, and I would send my husband post-haste. A "growth on a liver" is not really like having a skin cancer removed, and I would be horrified if I thought that money was the one thing keeping myself or my husband from being with a parent at a crucial time.

Thanks everyone. I agree. Also, as an fyi - we're in another country (not US). I will purchase the ticket for him now.
