Basically I've hated my first name all my life. I want to switch over to my middle name. I've never done it because I was worried it would be too confusing for me and for other people. Like maybe I'll ignore my own name (new name!) when I hear it at first. Or people will get confused and go by my first one.

I've already switched it with my computer sign-in, but of course that's not the same as telling people in person, "hey by the way, I prefer to be called (middle name)"

I'm about to fill out an application form and I think I may just use my middle name so when I start, it'll be like starting off fresh since nobody knows the difference.

Has anyone tried this before?

I wouldn't even consider this a name change if I were you. Keep your legal name the same and just fill out forms, applications, or introduce yourself with your middle name. Tons of people do this. My friend runs his company with his middle name.

My first name is a nice name, I like it. But I grew up being called a shortened traditional version of it. When I was 30 and a professional, I was done with it.

When I started a new job, I used my formal name. Now everyone but my closest family members use it.

haha cool, thanks. what about the people who call me by my first name already? Do I just tell them I go by my middle name now, or let them call me whatever they prefer? It just feels weird to suddenly switch, that's all. I don't like the idea of drawing attention to myself like that.

I have a bad-ass first name. I have yet to meet anyone else with my first name. However, like 2sure, I usually go by a shorter version of it and don't really mention my actual name. Again kinda like 2sure, as I got older, people started to insist on calling me by my actual name. At first, it was hit or miss for me to respond to people calling me by my actual name, but now I respond immediately to either.

If you just want people to call you by your name - just start intriducing yourself that way. Most people who met me after high school know me by a variation of my name and I also use that name on social sites and at work. I have had no problem. It is pretty odd for me to share my real name with anyone - unless i consider them a friend .

I know many people who use names that aren't legally their first names. Usually most places ask you what you prefer to be called or what name you go by. I have a friend you only uses her real first name at doctor's and such places. Otherwise everyone goes by her nickname.
