kiss_andmakeup Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 Bye honey! Why pet names are bad for your sex life - books - Relationships - TODAY.com I had read this article a while ago and I'm not sure what made me think of it. Probably that my boyfriend has taken to calling me "sweet pea" and I actually kinda love it! Now I feel like I shouldn't. What a strange article. Has anyone else noticed this pattern in their relationships? That calling each other "honey" on occasion (or something similar) has been a "gateway drug" to a boring, sexless relationship? 1

My 'rents bot have "pet" names for each other and unfortunately(not really), they have a fulfilling sexual life together still (58 & 61). There are just so many generalizations, it is sad. They use their pet names in a fun and to me disgusting yet sweet way. Mi madre es sweat pea and mi padre es honey....they have been beyond happily married for 36 years. Over analyzing should be left to psychologists, not authors or bloggers. -jmo 5

RachR Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 Haha, I have an anecdote to share. My last ex and I got into this habit of making cute noises at each other. It was similar to having a pet name, I'd say, except a noise...same concept. Anyway, I did notice that the more we did it, the more "cute" we were, it seemed things were less...sexy? Then one time, he made the cute animal noise during sex. I'm not joking. I told him not to ever do that again and he didn't. After that, we still would be cute like that but didn't do it so much.
mtnbiker Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 Agree. (10 characters blah blah) I have only used the "pet names" in one of my four "serious" relationships. It was the one I truly cared the most for, by far, which is why we both used these terms. We are now friends and she is married...she actually semi-recently mentioned that he is only her second man that she felt comfortable enough with to use these names. We were far too young, but we had a very healthy love life.
KraftDinner Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 Yeah, just cuz some idiot writes a book, doesn't mean they know anything about anything. 2

Haha! I know the "noise" thing you are talking about...my boyfriend and I have noises we make at each other that are typically part of some kind of in-joke between us. For example his cat makes this funny "brrrrup!" noise all the time so sometimes we just walk into a room and go "brrrup!" and it makes us giggle. But yes, if that ever made its way into the bedroom, it would be a serious problem!
Author kiss_andmakeup Posted October 19, 2012 Author Posted October 19, 2012 Yeah, just cuz some idiot writes a book, doesn't mean they know anything about anything. I agree. Just thought it was an interesting topic for discussion, is all. Something light to break up all the depressing gender war threads currently raging on. 1
Pyro Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 Mugwump? Furfy? Coincidentally honey was the term that I called my ex and one of the reasons that we split was lack of passion. I don't believe that is the case for everyone though. As long as the chemistry is there then you should be alright.

threebyfate Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 It depends on the name. Stagflation or Moo-face wouldn't be great names. Have a little respect and you should be fine. This article is uber daytime TV. The "experts" who come up with this stuff need to get a life. 2

That calling each other "honey" on occasion (or something similar) has been a "gateway drug" to a boring, sexless relationship? ummmmm noooo......i think a lot of people have pet names for each other.....the fact that you like the pet name you have been given dont let an articles bias put you off take it with a grain of salt minus the tequila....i dont find pet names affect sex life......depends ont eh person you are calling fluffy i guess......smilin....i wouldnt suggest calling any guy fluffy....he might get a bit indignant.......pet names can be fun...i wouldnt suggest screaming out pooky while orgasming though.......might kill the sexy mood a little..before and after sex.......no problem i think with pet names.......and if a guy ever uses bitch as a pet name....you have license to tie him to a ceiling fan from me.....deb

xxoo Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 (edited) Looks like a bad case of correlation = causation to me. "Ice cream causes drowning!" FWIW, we call each other "mommy" and "daddy" sometimes, and still manage to have filthy, dirty sex Edited October 19, 2012 by xxoo
Andy_K Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 FWIW, we call each other "mommy" and "daddy" sometimes, and still manage to have filthy, dirty sex I hope you don't do both at the same time! 1
Eve Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 H'mmm.. I suppose if you try to hold to the calling of pet names, say when you are genuinely pissed with each other - that could cause problems. I think our marriage works because we are 100% up front with each other and will not hide behind routines or anything if something needs saying. He is still my 'honey honey' though.. Can't say what he calls me in public as it is a bit too much to say out loud or in front of the children .. Take care, Eve x

ms_daisy21 Posted October 20, 2012 Posted October 20, 2012 My bf calls me Skettio. One night I was very sleep-deprived and trying to make us spaghetti for dinner and he asked what I was cooking and 'skettio' came out. Ever since, I've had the pet name. I like it. It's fun. It's something just between us. I wouldn't want him calling it out during sex or anything, but it's cute. Despite what the garbage article says we have a lot of fun in the bedroom =] 1
nessaaa Posted October 20, 2012 Posted October 20, 2012 Me and my ex didn't have pet names and sex with him SsSsssUuuuuuCcccKkkkeeddd. 1
