Something happened earlier tonight in the gym that made me realize I drop the ball when it comes to talking to women in certain environments. If Im at the bar or club I find I can be bold and have little worry about engaging a woman. Of course the alcohol helps. Also, if Im at the store or when I was in school, I had no issues either. Though certain places, like the gym or coffeehouse throw me off.

I dunno...maybe its not the environment...maybe its just I swallow my tongue at times. Tonight I saw these two girls working out on the squat machine. And I gave one of the girls friendly advice so she wouldnt screw her knees up. She really appreciated it and even thank me a second time later during my workout. She actually walked over to me to say thanks again and was very smiley. Then she stood there for a second (which I think she expected me to ask her name and stuff) and then her friend came and they went to use the cardio machines right where I was finsihing my workout.

I know she glanced at me a couple times before I left the area too, but I felt soooo dumb for not asking her name and chatting up. I dunno...for some reason I feel super awkward trying to kick game in the gym and a few other places. Also, part of the reason I dropped the ball is that I couldnt peg their age. Im 26 this weekend, though most people think im in my early 20s. These girls were somewhere between 17 and 21, and anything under 21 is too young for me.

But anyways, does anyone find that they feel awkward flirting with women in certain places? I always feel fine at the bar, club, store, and when I was on campus during college. But everything else like the park, gym, coffeehouse, etc...feels weird to me.

Like not using a machine to squat in the first place?

Its not as good as a free weight squat, but it still works the quads well. I have to use that machine or a hack squat machine in place of free weights because I have a bad back. In other words, the risk of screwing up my back isnt worth it. Plus most girls dont just jump into doing free weight squats without starting on machines and being guided towards the squat rack.

The toll on the back is far greater with a leg press or hack squat machine than you'd expect. And working the quads with a back problem shouldn't be your first concern anyway. Most back problems come from a lack of hip mobility. Hip mobility is trained by... free squats and deadlifts. Read Stuart McGill. Eric Cressey has a couple of good interviews with him.

Dude... I have scoliosis and muscle issues in my back. So trust me, I know how to take care of myself. So no...hip mobility isnt my issue.

I risk screwing my back up for life even worse with one screw up on a free weight squat or deadlift. Hence I just dont do them. I stick to exercises that give me back support. Thats vital to me, and Ive been just fine.

With a lying squat machine I dont have to worry about screwing up with my balance or the weight on my back since Im horizontal. And with the hack squat machine, I have back support, though Ill have the weight on my shoulders....but back support nonetheless. I stick to the lying squat machine for now until the weight is too easy for me and I need plates. Then Ill use the hack machine mostly.

And regarding leg presses. Again...it has back support I greatly need. Back support is big for me getting through a day at the computer, or driving my car, or sitting on a couch. I need decent support or Ill be in pain after awhile. Leg presses havent caused me any discomfort, and Im not risking screwing up with the weight like with a squat or deadlift in which I can royally screw my back up for life.

Ive already got pain and those exercises are not worth it when I can build my lower body with other exercises. And btw, this is the last I respond to this issue. I dont want to derail this thread.

It's like if you had eaten in that restaurant before several times, you will feel more comfortable like a home since you know what to order, where the restroom is etc.

I am used to going to bars. But when I go to this bar for first time, I still have to get used to that place. It atmosphere, crowd and layout etc.

I think Guys need That One successful approach to realize it's not a hard place to talk to girls.

Because a gym & coffee house lack the background noise to cover the sound of you crashing & burning.:lmao:

I'm the same way.

Duuuude... my girlfriend has scoliosis. She has no back pain whatsoever because she has excellent hip mobility. You know who else had scoliosis? Lamar Gant. And there's this fast guy who has scoliosis too and he squats too. It's Usain Bolt.

You do what you want to do, but in the long run the leg press will destroy your back. And that's not me talking, that's years of research talking. Again, Stuart McGill is the world's biggest authority on back health. Read his articles.

And read this: http://www.tonygentilcore.com/blog/my-case-against-the-leg-press/

Btw: you're not just fine. You're in pain as you can't even do normal stuff during the day, because you need constant back support. That is not fine.

I would have thought you were not interested, and were just very friendly, if you did not try to extend the interaction further.

Or I would think you had a girlfriend.

Some girls may get annoyed with overzealous, annoying gym guys who try to chat girls up. But if your a really nice guy and genuine, plenty of girls will overlook their pre concieved notion of the typical gym guys they encounter.

If a guy is nice and genuine, most girls would like to chat more. Unles their shy or have a boyfriend, or are not friendly and like to keep to themselves.
