Why Do Women Ask Questions That There Are Incorrect Answers to?

I'm not here to bash women, I just have a question for women about this.

The other day I was talking with my girlfriend about one of her best friends and the friend's new boy friend. I commented that he seemed a little less mature and accomplished than what I would have expected. My girlfriend replies, well that is because of who she (the friend) is. She doesn't attract mature and settled men like you. Would you date her? (said in a tone where she knows the answer will be no because she sees no way of me giving her friend a chance had the friend and I met when we were single)

Why would she ask this question? I obviously said no. But honestly, I don't know enough about her friend if I would or would not have given her a chance. She's attractive enough to at least get consideration. It just seems like such a bad question to ask as it has two black and white answers.

I've also had girlfriends ask me who cooks better, them or my mom. I once said the "wrong" answer and said my mom, but I now just default to saying my girlfriend cooks better. (and they all have cooked well, even the ones who haven't cooked as good as my mom).

These are the only two questions I can think of, but there have been a few other times where my girlfriend has asked me questions of similar scope.

Is this something women do a lot and if so, why?

I thought people only asked these type of questions in sitcoms.

Probably because she's insecure, and really, really, really wants to hear that she is much better than her friend in your eyes, and that her cooking is better than your mom's.

Well guys ask these questions as well.

I would have answered yes. I have a thing for telling people the truth and not what they want to hear.

As Admiral Ackbar says, "It's a trap!"

Good. Sometimes people shouldn't ask questions if they're not going to be prepared to deal with the answer. See also, "does my bum look big in this?"
