SJC2008 Posted September 29, 2012 Posted September 29, 2012 Not to say I don't get them but they are not as big a deal as some people make them out to be IMO. I was on a date a few days ago and we were at a restaurant and there was a lull in the conversation but I didn't even really notice it I guess I was thinking to myself or just chillin and she goes "say something". I joked around with her and brought up the line from Pulp fiction. Mabye if I was sober it would of been awkward but some people are so afraid of even a 5 second pause in a convo. Opinions on awkward silences?
suladas Posted September 29, 2012 Posted September 29, 2012 Depends on the person. Was out this week with a girl and there was a few of them and they were akward. But with the ex the few even on The first date were not akward at all.
SmileFace Posted September 29, 2012 Posted September 29, 2012 Well I don't mind pauses in conversations. I actually look forward to it - this guy who I use to date - we both found pauses in conversations refreshing. It was a way for us to just enjoy each other - as if we were listening to each others silence. However regular pauses aren't awkward - but awkward pauses are just bad. They usually come after an awkward moment. However the word is used and abused and our attention spans are so short that we see any pause and label it as awkward. 1
triponsynth Posted September 29, 2012 Posted September 29, 2012 Awkward is a word that I wish would disappear for bit. I have never felt uncomfortable with not talking. I think once you're comfortable with someone the silences can be refreshing in a way. Sometimes they jut offer a chance to regroup and gather thoughts. But then I'm introverted and more quiet in general so perhaps that is why I don't find silence to be awkward. 1

I'm dating a girl and we have great conversations, but frankly they're just so constant it can be a little exhausting. I don't have time to actually *think*. I smoke and she doesn't so occasionally I'll excuse myself for a cigarette just so I can actually hear myself think for a few minutes.
