So I was at a party a few weeks ago and I got into a discussion with these 2 girls about characters from the TV show LOST (for any of the geeks out there who know the show). They got into discussion about who they thought were more attractive, and they thought Desmond was more attractive (whole package, not just looks) than Jack (who was mostly leader of the group).

Obviously they chose Desmond because of the accent. And shockingly they didn't like Jack at all because they thought he worried too much. I thought he would be first choice since he was kind of alpha and a leader throughout the show. I explained to them that all leaders worry, that's why they have advisers...even Obama does.

While I understand many women expect men to be decisive and assertive.

Are women that turned off by an otherwise good looking and confident guy that worries sometimes? What if there's reasoning behind his worry?

What, no love for John Locke?

I figured most of them would have said Sawyer. Oh well.

My boyfriend is super-chilled. I am in awe. But I discovered that he has a worry streak and I love it! For me, it shows he cares. He worries about his sibling's children, he worries when he is prevented from doing as good a job as he can at work, and sometimes he worries about me :)

I thought it was just part of human nature to be honest.

Worrying and second guessing are two separate things. Make a decision and move on with it.

For me, I didn't like Jack more because of his character on Party of Five. He was so whiny!!! "Bailey! Life is so unfair!" :D They all were whiny by the end.

When you love a man, whether they are worry warts or a know-it-all doesn't really matter. It's the connection, chemistry and spark that evokes passion. A man can be dorky, clumsy or whatnot..but a woman somewhere will find those traits adorable and endearing.

It is like a puzzle..some are poor, good and bad fit..then there will always be that perfect fit.

My husband worries about stuff sometimes. Othertimes he doesn't worry. If a man worried all the time about everything, that would be a concern to me. However, it's normal for both men and women to worry sometimes.

I don't expect my husband to know it all, but I am so impressed that he does know an awful lot and in many areas, a lot more than I do! I rely on him for a lot of things, including computer issues and fixing stuff issues. :)

He is very easygoing, but he can also be serious when the situation calls for seriousness. Basically, flexibility is an attribute that both men and women appreciate: both an easygoing attitude and seriousness, according to the situation!

Heh, I have to admit I find this thread kind of amusing, in light of this other thread that appears just below it.

Truth is, guys, there are a lot of different women in the world and different women are attracted to different personality types.

Know-it-all? Good Lord no. Worry free? No. I come from a family where the men like to think they know everything. It makes them overly head strong and stubborn.

I think women do like a man that is assertive and direct. Where his intentions are clear. I don't think that means they need a man that knows everything and never worries about things.

If we are talking LOST here, Sawyer would have been my choice.:laugh:

I would class him as being 'dirty hot', which is basically - not touchable until they gain the ability to give their own heart.

Jack was ok (hot, intelligent blah, blah, blah) but caved in to responsibility rather than being able to manage his responsibilities. He was simply too moody without enough humour.

Sawyer was the full, hot deal.

I don't expect a man not to have worries..men are humans too. What's important to me is that he isn't a whiner who complains all the time and has a woe is me, poor me attitude or he's extremely timid and is afraid of risks. I don't want a know-it-all, but I do like someone who knows a lot.

Jack tried to force his leadership a lot and actually seemed to have a lot of "nice guy" issues -- I was able to identify with him quite easily . . .

Desmond probably fit the "good guy" mold better than any character on the show. It was Jack and Sawyer that were pitted against each other in the nice-guy/bad-boy dynamic.

No mention of John Locke...The girls thought Sawyer was too much of a pretty boy with not enough (character) depth.

Funny. I thought Sawyer was the only character with depth as he is the only guy who seems to have seemingly opposing qualities. Sawyer is not a bad guy, he has a whole bunch of issues which make him cynical and jaded, but he is also tormented by his own moral beliefs which he is yet to discover.

Jack is annoying, because he is basically a non-person.

I share similar thoughts. Initially Sawyer was pretty mean but I saw this as arising from his refusal to be pushed into a label by the other characters - plus he had a score to settle that had consumed him. Later in the series he showed that he did have the propensity to love and to be loved . Whereas Jack wanted love but could not hold true to it.

It took me a while to trust John Locke. I thought he was a paedo at first. John was a man tortured by his own convictions. His reliablility let him down because he did not get any of his needs met. I don't think he really examined what his needs were. Still, he was my one of my favourite characters.

Me, too. I've thought about it, because I miss the show, and now I'm forgetting character names. The Korean guy - I liked his friendship with Sawyer. Sawyer committed to the blonde woman - Juliet? Desmond and Penny were great together - she didn't give up looking for him, and he wanted to get back to her. Sun and.. what's his name? Jin?

Jack made mistakes, but tried to do the right thing. John was sad, in that he lost the woman he loved, because he was so angry and obsessed with the guy who screwed him over.

Now I know who a guy recently reminded me of! I couldn't think of it, but he reminded me a bit of Desmond.

I am sure the storylines and character names will come back once you start watching the programme again!

Gosh, I hated Jin at first. He was so productive but mean and domineering. but him and Sun.. gosh, too beautiful. :D

I can't remember much about Desmond at the moment.

LOST is the GREATEST show I have EVER watched..

The final episode had me in bits.

Do you remember Benjamin linus? He was 100% bad.. I suppose he represented the true narcissist, lol.

Just started watching the first season of Lost on DVD. Jack all the way! Smart, caring, competent, tall, dark and handsome. Reminds me a bit of my husband although Jack's a bit more soft spoken and not quite as assertive.

Sawyer's an opportunistic jack ass. Can't stand bad boys like this.

I remember Ben. It seemed like he had a thing for Juliet, when they first showed them both. :)

I've been watching the Gilmore Girls, but I will get back to Lost again. I miss it!

Lol, don't worry, he doesn't turn evil or anything. Jack is GORGEOUS! He is very similar to my sweety pops at home, except my Husband can be somewhat 'tongue in cheek' bossy and completely enjoys being so.

With LOST, the storylines allow quite intricate views of the characters to develop. Gosh, I can't praise the team who put the cast together enough. Basically you will get to see 'strong Jack' and 'weak Jack' as things progress.

I started to watch LOST again last night! I can't remember if the Juliet thing was just one of Ben's many mind games or not? Creepy little man..

Not watched the Gilmore Girls. My daughter read me the synopsis and it sounded ok.

Sorry OP, you got me excited and I have not directly answered your question. All in all, stability is important but Jack had issues letting people in to help him. I felt that he was just taken for granted too easily.

Also there is much to be said about raw attraction, (as represented in Sawyer) .. you can't argue with attraction. Though obviously it is foolish to follow such carnal longings, if one wants more than this.

Take care,
