I've been friends with this girl for years. A few years ago she dated my best friend. I thought they weren't good together, and sure enough she broke it off after a few months. But my best friend fell head over hell for her, and was completely devasted. It was a pretty nasty breakup. For the next three years he refused to see her, even though we all hung out in the same circle. After their breakup, she dated someone else for three years and he dated a few people too.

Anyway, that's all background info. Recently she and I have been hanging out more, sometimes just the two of us. I know she always liked me, and I liked her too. Now that we are both single, there's definitely attraction there. I have no doubt she wants us to be a couple. But I don't want to hurt my best friend. I haven't talked to him. I know he'll say it's okay, but it really isn't. He still refused to talk to her.

What do you guys think? Would you date your best friend's ex?

I think after three years, it's time for your friend to get a grip. I mean, really -- they only dated a few months. It isn't like they split up after years of being married. He's being childish.

Are you going to allow your best friend to make decisions about your life or are you going to do this for yourself? I'd say that you don't date your best friend's current girlfriend, and out of respect for his feelings, you don't jump right on wone he's recently broken up with. Yet one that he had for a few months three years ago should not be an issue that should come between you as friends. If it does, your friend isn't much of a friend to begin with, since your happiness should all he should be concerned with. Certainly not his old girlfriend.
