Pretty interesting article.

Apparently, the problem is ONLY exclusive to men...NOT women.

Straight Guys Can’t Even Think About Talking to Women Without Losing Their Cool

Apparently, men who even anticipate talking to a woman, tend to get all hay wired when they do so.

But women, they have no problem talking to men, they don't get tongue tied or anything.

Someone even suggested, if it's never even a problem for women to approach men, then why don't they do it?

In general, it's because they don't need to.

Yes and no. I have heard many complaints about getting guys to approach from women though eventually some approach.

Agreed. That's why I started with "In general"

I'm pretty sure it's mostly men who do the approaching, and the species isn't going extinct, so it's a system that works. (But there are women who approach, and also women who never get approached and we read about it here often enough.)

But... this is a topic to file under "scientists can get funding to study anything, no matter how obvious, provided it's about alcohol or sex"

So you have never seen a woman blush

I'll help you: the whole article is nonsense

Eventually women have to settle on one out of the few who do approach to proceed with their lives or they end up on LS with a triple digit or greater post count.

That study must be based on men that would rather spend the majority of their time reading comic books, playing video games and complaining on message boards why 'nice guys' can't get attractive girls than assert any effort into actually doing it. Women do have problems talking to men they are attracted to as well.

It's a good thing people source actual studies before jumping on a bandwagon...

A total of 71 students of the Radboud University Nijmegen (39 women) participated in exchange for partial course credit or €4 (approximately $5.50). Participants’ mean age was 21 years and all were native Dutch speakers, had a heterosexual orientation, and were not colorblind.

We're talking about a limited number of 21 year olds in the same geographic location. Are 21 year old men tongue-tied on average? Yeah. The average 21 year old frat boy probably consumes enough alcohol to equal his weight per annum too. Do men remain tongue tied all their lives and consume this much alcohol/annum? Some do, the majority don't.

I give the lie to the line that men act stoopid when talking to women.

I've talked matter-of-factly to plenty of women without getting goofy, and guess what? They think it's like talking to Mister Spock. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. :p

BTW what does the study say about men who talk serious to women who get all ditzy? :D

I concur, those guys don't have normal social interaction to begin with.

haha I believe it!

I've noticed when most guys talk to me they always act a little off.

With my ex when he first started talking to me his voice would crack, it was kind of funny but I made sure not to laugh. And he was always like... what the hell?!

Another guy I know gets all giddy and laugh'y around me, to the point sometimes he can't speak.

Another guy I know flat out told me that talking to me makes him nervous and he doesn't know what it is b/c it's never happened before.

None of them have awkward social skills outside of talking to me.

:p:p:p

It's all about maturity. Mature people can be matter of fact when they need to be and check their emotions at the door.

People in their early 20's have all the hormones of a teenager, with all the legal powers of an adult, but none of the experience of an adult. Further until about 25-30 they don't know they lack the experience.

Outta curiosity irc, where do you find the time to come up with this stuff?

Great point. This study is based on very poor methodology. Besides being based on a VERY limited number of respondents in the same area, the study almost begs for response biases.

When you take 71 people in the same class and pay them (or compensate them with partial credit/extra credit, whatever) instead of selecting them randomly, you run the risk of getting responses along the lines of what the students "think" the experimenters are trying to get at. So you can almost kiss the validity of the study goodbye.

Also, there are a myriad of different traits and characteristics inherent in people from all over the world. Therefore, at best, this study only depicts how Dutch college students, from one college, and who are paid for their responses, SAY they feel about the issue.

Women would be as "messed up" if they did the approaching.

It's not a gender thing, but a risk thing. Men take on 100% of the risk when they approach, so they will be uneasy and insecure. If women took on the risk, I'm sure the results would be similar.

I've met women even who really more or less say men should take on 100% of the risk in it all. Meaning women should not have to toss up any signs or anything, just men take on the risk and "deal with it" when they get rejected.

Bear in mind those females who say this are single. Speaks volumes why.

I was about to read the article til I saw the website name "geeksaresexy.net". Then I decided not to read the article. Why does every loser with a website think he knows about dating?

I agree.

The guy I have been seeing is normally the most social guy you can imagine. He is very extroverted and I am very introverted. Yet he even admitted last week that when our eyes lock he completely forgets what he even came to the coffee room for (coffee :))

He can't seem to help but show his attraction, his distraction over me, and truth be told, I am the same around him too. He does his best to impress (the extrovert) and I do my best to not become a total fool in front of others (the introvert). We try to ignore the attraction at work but it's hard. It's fun too :)

It's like a game of cat and mouse... we just change places at times. He pursues me at times, I pursue him at times.

Bottom line, women get nervous, get quiet (like me) and often say dumb things too.

Because he's got money. Need I say more?

I have no probs making my motives clear with a man, even though it involves risk.

Most women are not like me though. I will make it very clear that I am interested in a man and will even kiss him first now if it seems that he won't mind ;)

It should be equal imo.

Women should know what rejection feels like - builds a greater sense of humility and one grows from the lesson.

Well, most NORMAL women will make motives clear and toss out signs.

I was speaking of a few I've met who felt "entitled" to the point that they should have to do nothing and the man should take on 100% of the risk. Again, it screams why these few are still single.

Exactly. When they get lonely enough they might actually bite the bullet and ask a man out :) Who knows, they might actually even have... dare I say it... FUN!

I have a single friend, she has been single for a long, long time and yet she disses any guy that approaches her and says "he's not my type" or "I am out of his league" (I really hate that phrase btw). She has no idea what it's like to put herself out there. This girl is not even all that attractive to be honest.
