Eclypse Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 Here's a question for the ladies. Are you turned on by men who enjoy intellectual hobbies such as chess for example. I used to be on the school team and was actually quite good. Last few months I've gotten back into it and been playing heaps online. It's a heck of a lot more fun than getting wasted at clubs. So if you were talking to a man and it emerged he enjoyed chess, would that increase his value in your eyes? Or is it considered a nerdy pastime? 1
SmileFace Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 For me yes. However it should have a balance. Intellectual, educational, recreational and social outings. 1
Janesays Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 It wouldn't increase or decrease my opinion of him. Everyone I know plays chess. Now, if he could beat me, THAT would be different.
Els Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 Not necessarily chess, but intellectual hobbies, definitely. Always fun to have someone to play with.
El Brujo Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 Funny, when I asked that very same question a couple of months ago, women replied with a lot of negativity. Maybe I have B.O. or something... 1
KathyM Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 Turned on by that isn't the word for it, but I'd certainly have more respect for a man who knew how to play. I think the ability to play chess shows the guy has some intelligence, some patience, some perseverence and some planning skills. My first blind date with my husband consisted of double-dating with my sister and her boyfriend, and at the end of the date, after visiting for awhile, he asked if I played chess, and we spent some time doing that on our first date. He's very good at it, and I could give him a challenge as well. We taught our sons to play also. I wouldn't recommend suggesting to the girl to play it that much though, because generally people are most impressed by more exciting activities, so I wouldn't make too big of a deal out of it.
Untouchable_Fire Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 I think women like it better than guys who play Dungeons and Dragons. 1
Ugh1 Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 Not necessarily turn me on, but it would definitely make me feel more like this could be a relationship eventually. This is because I want my mate to be intelligent. It takes some intelligence to play chess and to enjoy chess.
GirlontheLam Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 Not a turn on, not a turn off. But I would love to play with you! I generally am more excited about nerdy guys in general, and focus on meeting them. So the activities that are like bonus points for me are the creative interests: music, arts, writing, cooking..... Oh and being able to dance is bonus points. Playing chess just makes me assume you are at least a little nerdy, which is basically a requirement in my book.
Art_Critic Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 All guys play chess... dating is a chess match, it's all about the checkmate 2
denise_xo Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 Chess isn't really a criteria for me one way or the other. But I like men with intellectual hobbies/ interests.
Disillusioned Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 Chess is one thing, but you never want tp play Scrabble against any woman who can't spell and has a temper like a volcano. Trust me on that.
jobaba Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 Things like hobbies cannot create attraction. They can give you points if she already is physically attracted to you. Trust me on this one. My hobby is a lot cooler than chess.

Lots don't too. Just find a nerdy girl and you'll have a match made in heaven. PS: By nerd, I mean someone that enjoys intellectually stimulating activities, hobbies, i.e. you take a college class for fun. Different from a geek, which is a nerd combined with social awkwardness, i.e. Kip. And even Kip got married lol
Forever Learning Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 I think smart men are extremely sexy. And those with hobbies, and skills, and interests. 2
Els Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 No women find chess sexy. My bf used to play in tournaments. Chess is one thing, but you never want tp play Scrabble against any woman who can't spell and has a temper like a volcano. Trust me on that. Pff, the Scrabble dictionary is chock-full of words that most people wouldn't consider words anyway. Cwm aalii qi xi zo? Things like hobbies cannot create attraction. They can give you points if she already is physically attracted to you. Trust me on this one. My hobby is a lot cooler than chess. Oh, certainly, this goes without saying. I don't think anyone is assuming that playing chess is ALL they have to do to get a mate. At least, I would hope not, because that would say a lot more about their intellect than whether or not they do play chess.
threebyfate Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 I think smart men are extremely sexy. And those with hobbies, and skills, and interests.Well said! H and I play chess sometimes. Whomever wins gets to call the shots for the rest of the night which results in some creativity.
CarrieT Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 No women find chess sexy. I do. And the fact that my BF sings sea chanties and Russian liturgical songs, knows the by heart and can talk at length about space travel, WWII, and medicine just makes me weak in the knees....

Different from a geek, which is a nerd combined with social awkwardness, i.e. Kip. And even Kip got married lol Yeah I don't think women like the more "geeky" type of men, I'm extremely nerdy myself but I'm also extremely socially awkward so I don't get any female attention. I do have a little brother whose a little less nerdy, perhaps slightly more socially awkward, but also a little better looking than I am so while he also hasn't ever had a girlfriend (he probably needs to approach more) he does actually get girls talking to him.
darkmoon Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 i'm a female chess-player, been out with two chess-playing guys, something in common plenty to talk about, but not a must
Taramere Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 I like to have a game of chess now and again, but I'm not "turned on" by it. I'm trying to imagine how a game of chess could be incorporated into some sort of sexual role playing. You'd have to have a special chess set made up of naked figures. Maybe every time one of your pieces got taken, you'd have to remove an item of clothing or perform a sex act on the other person. There's probably a chess porn film out there somewhere, where the pieces perform atrocious sex/torture acts on eachother. To be honest, though, I'd like to keep the sex out of chess. Especially as it's a game I sometimes play with other family members. I would be pleased if a male partner played it, but it wouldn't be something to get wet about. 2
Crusoe Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 There's probably a chess porn film out there somewhere One where Bishops take Queens? They like to keep that very hush, hush. 1
Taramere Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 One where Bishops take Queens? They like to keep that very hush, hush. I'm more worried about allegations of bestiality involving the Knights. 1
