Zyux Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 My girlfriend and I are in a long distance relationship, her in Virginia for college and myself in New Jersey. It's a 5 and a 1/2 hour drive down, but with the way I drive it might be like 5 hours haha. How often should I visit? I was thinking about once a month because money is a problem (it'll cost about $70-$80 bucks each visit) and I'm going to college too. Also for any of you in long distance relationships please feel free to drop me some advice, the more the merrier! Thanks guys.
january2011 Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 Visit as often as money and time allow and emotional needs require. Be realistic about the first two and honest about the last one. Talk it through with her so that you both agree on a frequency that moves the relationship forward and holds neither of you back. And if possible, alternate who does the travelling. Discuss other ways of maintaining the emotional connection while you're not physically together, e.g., Skype, calls, letters, email, texts etc. 2
justwhoiam Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 Once a month would be nice, see if she can do that same, that would mean you can meet twice a month.
Author Zyux Posted August 28, 2012 Author Posted August 28, 2012 As of now she has no means of transportation (first two years on campus you are not permitted to have a car). I don't mind taking the responsibility of driving down to visit her. Hopefully when she gets her car it'll be a lot easier since we can meet halfway. She wanted me to visit next weekend but I objected saying it was too early, I'm going in the middle of September, then at the end of October for a Halloween party with her and then she has Thanksgiving break for November so she is coming back up and then break in December.
justwhoiam Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 As of now she has no means of transportation What about taking a train? Hopefully when she gets her car it'll be a lot easier since we can meet halfway. That surely would impact on both your finances, as you should sleep in a hotel or somewhere. She wanted me to visit next weekend but I objected saying it was too early I can imagine how excited she was at that statement.
Author Zyux Posted August 28, 2012 Author Posted August 28, 2012 (edited) What about taking a train? That surely would impact on both your finances, as you should sleep in a hotel or somewhere. I can imagine how excited she was at that statement. Well it's not like I was "NO WAY AM I GOING", we were listing possible dates I could visit based on schedules and events. She asked me if I wanted to go to one of the football games and they aren't every weekend. There is one next weekend and then others in October, that date was chosen purely because of the football game she doesn't mind me visiting at a later. We both know people in Washington DC so finding a place to stay shouldn't be that big of a problem but we'll see when we get to that stage. She has a train station 30-40 minutes away from her location if she can find a ride it would work out, train tickets are about 80 bucks one way so that might be a problem but we'll work some sort of plan out. sunlover Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 I suggest once a month, but youre also going to run into final exams and holidays or long breaks which will bring you two together more often. Be sure to accommodate each others study schedules. Maybe you can meet somewhere in between too? Explore Baltimore one weekend.
catluvr2 Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 (edited) My boyfriend left 3 hours away for college. Since he doesn't have a car down there, and I don't drive we at first agreed we'd go 3 months without seeing each other and just use internet and Skype to contact each other. So I won't see him until Thanksgiving break. But he recently mentioned to me about coming to visit him. I figure I'll take a train to go see him about once a month I think. So I think once a month is about good. I know other couples that go to school on opposite sides of the country and only see each other on holiday breaks. It's all about what you guys want to do.
