On the hook to ask her for a date?

Ok, I went out with a new girl a few weeks ago (first meeting). Things seemed to go well, but then slowly fizzled before we were able to go out again. A text is shot back and forth every once in a while between us - so there's no disdain, hatred, or dislike, but probably a lack of raging romantic interest. She mentioned a week or so ago that she had an event early this past week. I just sent her a text asking how it went, and it opened the flood gates, and a lot of texts have since been exchanged.

That said, the last text I sent essentially asked her if she had any nifty weekend plans - basically I asked to be nice...I wasn't planning on asking her out, at least not for the weekend. Her response was, "Why?" followed by a run down of her plans for the day, which were kind of procedural/blah - with nothing this evening. What are her expectations behind the "why?"? Is she expecting me to ask her out at this point? In relize, in retrospect, that it may have been perceived as a leading question.

I'm not sure if you're on the hook for a date - but if you want to see her again, it would likely be prudent to propose some kind of meeting...you've essentially teased her, and she basically told you the door's open. If you don't walk through it, don't expect to in the future...

You pretty much describe my current situation. I'm in this weird text/friendship thing that I have no idea where it's going after our first meeting.

I'm having a hard time reading if she wants more or just being friends or something. I just can't read the situation at all. Usually after first meeting I thought it kind of fizzle but for some reason we keep communicating each day just like in your situation.
