Most of the military folks I know are anything but right wingers. That's really an inappropriate stereotype. ;)

I trust you on that one... I don't know many men in military.

I was going by another forum where someone said 70% of men in military vote republican. But this person was unable to back up that statement with evidence so....it's probably made up.

That may be true, but Republican and far right aren't necessarily synonymous.

Most of the guys I know are fairly moderate, and aren't party loyalists (except the Air Force, those guys tend to be farther right than the other branches, for some reason...).

A difference in political views would generally mean a difference in views of economics, race, gender, and gay rights issues. And people with opposing views on those topics usually dont get along.

Im fine with various positions that come from the left of the political spectrum as long as it doesnt go far towards any sort of extremism (Communism, Anarchism, etc). Im also fine with the middle of the road folks. Once a girl starts leaning right, its generally a no go for me.

People who think in terms of "wings", regardless of left or right, are rarely people with individual thoughts. Closing yourself into a box by considering yourself "left" or "right" means you have to take everything attached to the label, even things inconsistent with your own values.

What is called "Conservative" today, 100 years ago was called liberal. Did you know that in fact, it was always the traditional liberal who backed unrestrained markets and foreign intervention, while Conservatives were for economic regulation and anti-foreign intervention? Yet today, it's considered the opposite. Labels mean nothing.

The Third position against both is the best one. "Leftists" often times are vain attention whores with childishly thin skin, hatred of logic and the grotesque hypocrisy. They want to change everything, even things that are good. "Right-wingers" on the other hand, are cold of heart, narrow minded , reactionary , and too big of cowards to say what's on their mind. They want to conserve everything for the sake of conserving it, even injustice.

I do agree with your post to an extent. I don't align 100% with either, but for the most part I lean to the left. I am actually pretty close to the middle of the road. Extremes on both side bother me, but right extremists bother me more :)

Keep in mind that I don't live in US, but in Australia whose politics tends to mirror US (but is not identical).

The current state of politics in Australia is so appalling that during the last election, I put in a joke vote for The Sex Party (since voting is compulsory, which I also dislike). I disliked both, left and right party choices at the time.

Seriously?

What kind of messed up law is that?

I'm a conservative and religious person myself though in terms of party alignment I'm neither Republican or Democratic I don't like both of them. and I honestly can't stand some of the ideas of the more liberal people out there so I don't think I'd be willing to date one.

"Wing" or "far-side-of-the-spectrum/continuum", your use of semantic rhetoric to disparage those who use common terms to describe political positions is actually quite ironic.

Yes, Kennedy today would be a Republican. Reagan today would actually be left of today's moderate Democrats. But labels still have their use in the day and age in which they're used.

I'd be more concerned about dating someone who never votes or who doesn't believe in the political process at all.

I'd also have a hard time dating anyone who voted for George Bush twice. Once I might look past... Twice?? That's just an idiot, right there...

"It's hard wurk."

Um. Yea.

I think having differing political views is the last thing to worry about. If Mary Matalin and James Carville can remain happily married, it's just a red herring. Most people are politically apathetic if you look at the dropping numbers of people who vote. More people are dropping out of the Rep and Dem parties to register Independent. As for the military, Ron Paul has received the majority of his support from them.

By the way, Conservatives tend to believe in marriage and family more than liberals. You might keep that in mind.

It turns out that I care more about politics than I thought.

I am SO totally turned off by right wing people and their reasoning

The more extreme, the worse. This is a deal breaker for me (and I wasn't even aware that it was).

I agree.

No, I'd not be able to.

He needs to think like me socially and politically.

They just claim to but 9 out of 10 states with the lowest divorce rate are blue states and many conservatives are hypocrites like Newt Gingrich and Mark Sanford.

This is actually one of my most difficult dating challenges here in Houston. I am an arts professional, and a tree-hugging liberal secular humanist pro-choice gay rights' activist deep in the heart of Texas (clapclapclap clap).

My last three successful dating partners have all been ex-pats - two Scots and a Canadian.

Yep, we libs just believe in hot monkey sex.

Were I ever to be on the dating scene again I could only date someone who agreed with me politically. I don't think I could tolerate spending my life with someone who liked telling others what to do, be it with their wallets or in their bedrooms. Nor could I tolerate fear mongering.

I think it's just more hip these days to label yourself as an independent, even though for the vast majority of people it would accurate to label them left/right. democrat or republican.

I would but would they date me? like UMC said! This is an intersting topic and there was an article on yahoo that said many successful couples share the same political views (I skipped to the end sorry if this was stated already)

If someone didn't want to date me becasue of my political views I think it would be kind of silly IMO, and leaning to the left in a Republican Texas I might not let the cat of the bag until exclusive lol!. I think it would be silly not to date someone because they share a different political view. Other than discussing the topic itself what difference would it make? Besides it would make for some great debates!

I think I could respect someone's opinion if they had solid reasoning behind it (even if it differs from mine).

But being with a guy that seems like he came straight off Fox news

And then even worse, trying to force those opinions on me.

Example, or seeing someone like that?

Did a quick wikipedia on yalls govt is center right and center left like our version of democrats and republicans?

Our politicians point fingers like kids and each party hates the other so much I think the other side (regardless of which side) would let the country crash just not to agree with the other party.

But I have found, particularly when using a more conservative site such as Eharmony, that not disclosing early led to disappointment and even anger when I DID disclose. I had much rather someone close me out early than meet, go on a few dates, start to develop some affection, then go 'Wait - what? You voted for WHO?"

I have been accused of being deliberately misleading, because I knew 'no one in their right mind' would date me if I told the truth.

So I put it out there in my profile, and let them make the decision.

I just updated my dating profile to say that one of my big turn offs is being right wing. There :p

As for them believing more in marriage :lmao::lmao::lmao:

This is a pretty good topic actually. My last bf and I actually voted the same way in the presidential and the same way in the gubernatorial elections even though the guys were from opposite political parties.

We've also both expressed that we like one but the other is a disappointment.

Hmm...I never really gave that much thought until now.

Thanks for that.

But to answer the question...no. I'm not going to like or dislike someone because of their political views. That would be shallow.

Totally disagree. Shallow to me is almost 100% based in physical appearance. Not dating someone because their beliefs don't mesh with yours is not "shallow", but completely understandable. Especially when it comes to more social issues that deal with human rights. How can your relationship last in the long run if you lie on opposite ends of crucial issues?

I don't lie on one side or the other. I'm open minded.

So what happens if you have many good gay friends and your partner is vocally anti gay marriage?
