What are the reasons a guy would break up with a girl multiple times and keep going back to her?

Besides the fact that she lets him come back and he knows he can. Are there any other reasons?

No, that pretty much covers it.

He does it, because he can.

Today it is widely believed that our personalities are formed through the influence of three separate yet interrelated components: biology, psychology and socialization. And this is called biopsychosocial perspective. This model assumes that individual maturation is never limited to one real of experience. As we grow our personality forms from a variety of domains including the biological (genetics), psychological (emotional) and social/cultural influences

As a young child you needed to develop a secure relationship with at least one primary caregiver for social and emotional development to occur normally. Without this secure love, children can have psychological and social impairments that will undoubtedly affect how they feel about themselves, whom they choose as a romantic partner, and how they operate in relationships.

As we grow up we develop an orientation to new attachment figures, both friends and lovers, who have remarkably comparable personalities or traits with our original caregivers

When we search for partners who have comparable unfavorable traits with the parents that we had an ambivalent or avoidant relationship with, and then hope to change them to fill emotional voids in ourselves-this is called repitition compulsion.

It takes a lot of careful in-depth analysis in his and your personal situation, but a possible explanation could be:

He had a dysfunctional relationship with his parents which has impaired his capacity to trust, love and be intimate.

You had a dysfunctional relationship with your father, you unconsciously try to fill this hole by seeking out partners that display the same character flaws and hopeless trying to 'fix' them.

Much like the classic example of the daughter of a drunk seeking out abusive boyfriends.

Wow very informative. Thanks. He grew up with his mother and 2 sisters after his dad left. He doesn't have much of a relationship with his dad. I grew up with an elderly relative after my parents left when I was 8. They were both drug abusers and my dad was an alcoholic, both of them before I was born.
