sunnysmiles Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 My ex fiance wants to go to couples therapy with me once a week. I've never gone to therapy before. Did it help your relationship?
Silly_Girl Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 I went with an ex. It helped me. Didn't help the relationship. I now consider the phrase 'trying to make it work' synonymous with 'flogging dead horse'. I would have to be heavily invested and have a good deal of faith to consider it again. What's in it for you?
FitChick Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 What's in it for you? It sounds like she wants to salvage the relationship and get married. This sort of therapy depends on the skill of the therapist. I think it also depends on their having a successful marriage themselves. Sometimes it's a case of 'physician heal thyself' or 'those who can -- do, those who can't -- teach.' It certainly can't hurt you. You need to learn communication skills like learning how to 'fight fair.' It's a good sign that he is open to any kind of therapy, frankly, and doesn't feel he is 'right' so doesn't need it. Good luck!
dreamingoftigers Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 Traditional marital counseling, no. EMotional-focussed therapy: enthusiastic yes! And it has an 80% success rate!
