FitChick Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 These sites may have fewer members but are more focused in terms of interests, lifestyles or body types. Someone mentioned The Onion personals, which I'd never heard of. I know there is a fitness website that I spotted a year or so ago. The only reason I didn't join was because most of the men were too young. A friend met her boyfriend through Nerve which, when I last looked at that website years ago, it was for sophisticated erotic photos and literature. Now I think it's more hipster. So this might be a good thread for people who are sick of the oft mentioned OKC, POF, EHarmony and Match.com.
oaks Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 Depends which niche you wish to occupy. I'm sure "adultfriendfinder" will pull up hits in your favourite search engine. In the UK I've seen that many of the daily national (and some regional) newspapers run a dating site (well, someone runs it for them and they get to put branding on it and take a cut of the money, I guess). I used one of those a while ago, before migrating to the main free sites. I ran into the usual problem on paid sites: not being able to tell if the person at the other end was paying, so unsure if they were even able to read my messages. Waste of time. There are some sport/activity sites. I used Fitness Singles for a while, but (in addition to the above problem) it's so geared around sporting activities that most people seemed to forget to say anything else about themselves. Had a few dates from there, though.
ascendotum Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 FC - good thread, but people need to mention what makes something like the Onion or whatever site different though. I couple I know of AshleyMadison - for married people looking for affairs. (I dont think too many would have their pic on display), CollarMe + Alt + Savagehearts, for bdsm lovers, JewDate for jewish people obviously, Indiedating, Goth.net for people with that lifestyle. Adultfriendfinder owns stacks of niche hookup sites (likely with many fake profiles to bump up the female numbers). There was an activity (ie rock climbing, bowling, hand gliding, etc) based dating site in my country but I cant see it anymore. Then there is now a bunch of 'sugardaddy' dating sites and also beautifulpeople which you need to be approved by other memebers before you can become a member. Anyone know anyone who used 'beautifulpeople'? Oaks - what was 'Fitness Singles' like from guy perspective (mostly guys was it)?
oaks Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 Oaks - what was 'Fitness Singles' like from guy perspective (mostly guys was it)? Not enough women in my area who shared my sport, and since it's so sport-focussed I found it difficult to talk to anyone who didn't share my sport. I think I met one woman twice and had one woman flake on me (cancelled just as I was leaving the house to go and meet her). It wasn't good value for money for me. Also saw some of the same faces on OKC.

Oaks - what was 'Fitness Singles' like from guy perspective (mostly guys was it)? Actually, the profiles seem to be real at adultfriendfinder.com. A very famous person was on the site -- the madman who just shot all those people in the Colorado cinema. Perhaps not a great selling point, though. If you are in the UK you might be thinking of Spice. On Fitness Singles, one would think there would be less posting of old photos. That might have been the one I looked at. Most of the people were serious bodybuilders, triathletes, marathoners, etc. I felt out of my league. I just want a guy who is in reasonably good nick and doesn't sit on the couch with a bottle of red wine, watching DVDs.

Frogwife Posted July 21, 2012 Posted July 21, 2012 and also beautifulpeople which you need to be approved by other memebers before you can become a member. Anyone know anyone who used 'beautifulpeople'? I live in Paris and a I registered with a site called Attractive World (terrible name, but the French love to use their English). It's the same concept - you have to be voted in by other members. The men are - by and large - attractive, but more than that they're professional and well-educated. I've been very impressed and met some really nice men. It's not inexpensive - about $80/mo - but you get what you pay for. They also organize social activities in the city dinners, happy hours, etc.
Casablanca Posted July 21, 2012 Posted July 21, 2012 Where do you live? If you live in a large city like NYC, LA or Chicago, I'm sure you'll be able to find something, but a smaller town isn't going to have a lot users. I live in a city with about 1.3 million in the area, I looked at a couple niche dating sites and most of them didnt have anyone or just one or two in my area.
LittleTiger Posted July 21, 2012 Posted July 21, 2012 I met my guy on Fitness Singles. I'm English and he is a kiwi, currently working in Australia. We both loved the site. You can do a search for people who are into specific sports and fitness activities which is great if you are looking for a 'partner in crime' - a running partner, scuba diving buddy, tennis opponent or whatever. FitChick, there are lots of guys on there who are not serious fitness freaks, especially if you ignore the body builder section. The site is really aimed at people finding others with shared values rather than wanting to pair up with a premium athlete. My guy is an ultra-marathon trail runner who has qualified for the world championships in his age group and he is in peak physical condition. I am an ex-competitive swimmer, who likes to hike and swim and keep fit in the gym - I couldn't run further than a couple of miles to save my life! It isn't important. We were both looking for someone who valued the outdoors and keeping fit and healthy and we found each other. Incidentally, I met lots of guys who were probably nowhere near as fit as you are but liked to look after themselves - if that's the kind of guy you are looking for you just need to cast your net a little wider.
