How do you ask out someone you've not been acquainted with?

Like someone you meet at her workplace or a coffee shop?

I always get self-conscious about being too obvious; I think that she'll see the conversation as a set-up right away. Also, I don't know how to bridge things from conversation to asking.

For lunch I went to a pizza shop on Monday and met a cute girl there. We talked as much as we could, and then I wrote down my number on a receipt and told her that she could "keep the receipt." But then I ruined it by saying something stupid like "Oh yeah, that number ... you should call it" at the last minute. Ugh. In retrospect, it also probably came off as timid -- I'm trying to work on coming off confident.

Have you any advice for me?

About the only thing I can think of is you need to flip the script and get her number rather than giving her your number on a receipt...

Not that what you did is all that bad but it won't work.. for the most part a woman isn't going to call a man.

Take the energy you put into giving her your number and put that same energy into getting her number...
