Further research indicates a timeline sometime in the 1950's, which would match up with the 10 bucks offered for the question. Since it was a tabloid, the question and answers don't surprise me. Corporal punishment of women wasn't uncommon in the past. A lot has changed.

carhill Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 Here's a larger scan if the redirect works on it. I'd have to run it through Photoshop and examine it in detail. From a cursory examination and being familiar with scanning newspaper articles of that era, it looks authentic to me. The comments, while typical NYC 'direct', use words which match what I was used to growing up. Additionally, there were still a lot of men who viewed women as lesser persons and 'property'. I noted the references to 'children' and corporal punishment was common (I received plenty myself). Lastly, the 'newspaper' was generally a sensationalist tabloid. Drama sells, then and now. Do a Google image search for 'New York Daily Mirror' and compare both headlines and print style and copy to the scanned article for comparison.
