Who, in a divorce, should get majority custody? Why?

Equal custody? Is there such a thing?

How should the finances and assets be done?

Thanks.

It entirely depends upon the 2 individuals. But one thing I believe is it should NOT matter at ALL whether you are a man or woman. Technically some states say on paper it doesn't but we all know the truth. Just look at normal custody rulings. A woman has to be nearly a murderer to lose custody. All a man has to do is work for a living to provide for his family (a good thing) and he loses custody because of it. And if he doesn't work for a living, he loses custody because of it. Just another example of how you can't win if you're born a man.

I know of at least six men who have sole custody of their children. One worked two jobs so that he could put his three daughters through college. When the oldest two finished he started college himself..he now teaches third grade. :) I know several others who have joint custody and see their children regularly(one is my brother and he has her 2 or 3 days a week) and during the school year every weekend. I think it depends on the state and the parents.

IME, with male friends who are divorced fathers, it's been a mixed bag. Things sure have changed from a generation ago, when some of my friends first started divorcing. Mothers got primary custody most of the time back then, unless they didn't want it. My personal opinion (not a judge) is that the best interests of the child regarding stability/schooling/social dynamics should be paramount.

I've seen that. One friend fought for and got equal custody long before it became more common, this back in the early 80's. He had both a son and daughter. I got to watch them grow up and get married. Good kids.

How should the finances and assets be done?

IME, preferably by mediation. Lobbing bombs at each other costs a ton of money. Child support is generally proscribed here in Cali but most everything else can be negotiated. I highly recommend negotiation. Specifics are far too complex for a forum post. My personal preference was to preserve both of our abilities to continue after divorce without becoming impoverished. We achieved that through mediation. We both gave up something in gaining separate status.

In Florida the better parent/person will get custody. Most States unfairly favor females. Maybe Florida is trying to limit the increasing # of Casey Anthonys.I am a man, I got full custody, and I am but a simple photographer, but my ex is also the one of the worst people the world has ever known.
