davidqvu90 Posted June 30, 2012 Posted June 30, 2012 (edited) "A person who steals for you, will steal from you" I forgot where I heard it but it made me think about my best friend. I have known him (my best friend) for about 5 years and I trust him a lot. If I have to loan money to somebody, it would be him. I recently loan him $ and he paid me back on time with interest. In addition, we have never fought and he is very very nice to me. He's very reliable and is always willing to help me. Recently, he told me some stuff that made me reevaluate the trust that I have for him. For example, he told me that he stole a car when he was little (teen years. He's in his 30's now). Also, he told me that he stole (recently) from a bank (petty amount) and a tax place where he used to work at. In fact, he gave me some computer stuff, which I found out later that he stole from the tax place. He told me that stole computer equipments from the tax place and then sold them on ebay. Should I still have complete trust my best friend? Is it possible for a person to be unethical to a person and is ethical to another? Edited June 30, 2012 by davidqvu90
dixiepix Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 #1. You have known him for 5 years and he has always been reliable and trustworthy for you. #2. Many times, individuals don't think that stealing from an entity or business is as bad as stealing from a person. It can somehow be rationalized: "Well I don't get paid enough, the company "owes" me this." #3. stealing a car in his teens was years ago, back in the day when we are invincible and "it wont happen to me" attitude. #4. It took a lot of trust on his part to share such a secret with you. Since his behavior bothers you, as it would most... myself included.... in being a friend and wanting to keep a friend, I might look for an opportunity to mention that I don't agree with what he does or has done and that you would really prefer not to know unless he is calling from jail. Because that is where he will land himself if he doesn't grow up and realize it is wrong. Technology is far too sophisticated for him to continue to get away with even petty theft. As his friend, that is what I would be worried about.
