fortyninethousand322 Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 Yea. Guys didn't really do that when I was young. They didn't sit around and play video games. I mean, they'd get in groups and play Madden or hockey but not sit alone and play Final Fantasy for hours on end. I did do a little bit of that, so I guess in retrospect I was kinda geeky. Now it seems the norm for guys to sit around and play video games by themselves for hours. I don't know about "hours". Maybe an hour or two every once in a while or once a week or something like that. The Arkham game that I mentioned earlier for example wasn't even my game (it was my brother's and he's never even played it) and I played it over the course of a few days when we had back to back huge blizzards. Wasn't like I was going to leave the house and do anything anyway.
seachangeoflove Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 I used to be very very ugly and very over weight (I lost over 50 pounds about 7 years ago) anyway, I have found that being ugly and/or obese gets you treated 'like one of the guys' not like an "ugly girl" sounds like they were treating you like any other competition they would face. Some people play fair and some people do what ever it takes to win. A male opponent would have been treated the same, if he let them. Running out and crying? Well, you need to learn to stand up and fight back. Yes, a hot girl would get treated better, is that fair? probably not but that is how life works. Your treatment was not because you are ugly, you were just there.
Feelsgoodman Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 (edited) Not sure why I'm bothering to respond, but.... please, enlighten me as to what "mental problems" you assume I have based on my post. Your life consists of going to comic book conventions, organizing nerd meetings/video game competitions and trying to "alpha nerd" other nerds (whatever the hell that means...) You can't possibly think that this is a normal lifestyle for a woman in her late 20s? And don't you think that the fact you immerse yourself in this infantile environment is the reason you're having so much trouble finding a man? If most people that you interact with are 'chidults' obsessed with videogames and comic books, why are you surprised that their idea of what a woman is supposed to be like is based on what they see in these comic books/videogames? They don't even live in the real world...so how are you going to have a 'relationship' with a guy who jerks off to anime girls? Edited June 27, 2012 by Feelsgoodman

Most of my social circle are nerds/introverts, and are in perfectly good relationships. The nerd culture has its issues, but I've known lots of good, well-socialized individuals in it. It's like any other "hobby" group. In your esteemed opinion, what is a normal lifestyle for a woman in her late 20's?

Are you so angry with life that you have to throw out nasty insults to a group of people who play games/read comics or whatever so called nerds/geeks do? Why do you even care? For the record, I consider myself a geek. I married one. We have 4 kids and work. We both have college degrees. I know many other geeks that are like us- just normal people who "geek" stuff. 2

How's that lifestyle any different than grown men going to watch other grown men compete in an athletic contest?
Els Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 I have feelsgoodman on ignore, but for some reason people always quote him and so I always end up seeing what he says. All I can say is, he strikes me personally as the sort of man who has never grown out of teenagehood, based on his comments on other people, women, and just viewpoints in general. His immaturity is demonstrated here by not understanding that everyone is different, and belittling people different from oneself, activities that I am given to understand that teenage males are extremely fond of. Hobbies do not make someone a genuine 'chidult', an immature mindset does.
Feelsgoodman Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 In your esteemed opinion, what is a normal lifestyle for a woman in her late 20's? Having interests and hobbies that are more advanced than those of a typical 8-year old? This is why I say that being a nerd is a mental disability. You guys are obsessed with things that were originally aimed at teens and even pre-teens (comic books, videogames, etc.) It's an infantile lifestyle for infantile people.
Feelsgoodman Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 How's that lifestyle any different than grown men going to watch other grown men compete in an athletic contest? I have to admit, that's pretty stupid too.

Most of those seem like exclusively "old people" hobbies. I mean, really, I'm gonna find guys by picking up bird watching or shuffle boarding?
Woggle Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 I think many of these geeks are just unlikable people no matter what gender you are. After I got my PS3 for Christmas I went into Gamestop for an HDMI cable and the guy behind the counter was just an unlikable jerk. No offense to anybody here but even though I like a few games I can't stand most of the gamer community. 1

People who read are stupid. Many children play sports. People who play sports are stupid. Many children watch tv. People who watch tv are stupid. This seems to be your logic anyways. Really, though, at least with the video games, many are now made for adults. They have well defined charectors beautiful graphics and great story lines. Many games have a lot more intelligence than much of the crap they have for adults on tv.
Feelsgoodman Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 Many children read. People who read are stupid. If you're adult reading children's books, then yes. Many children play sports. People who play sports are stupid.Physical activity is different from mental activity. Many children watch tv. People who watch tv are stupid. If you're an adult who watches sesame street and mickey mouse cartoons, then yes, you are retarded.
zengirl Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 Not that I think there's actually anything wrong with reading children's books as an adult if you want. Who outgrows Dr. Seuss? But most nerdy books/comics/video games/board games/etc are NOT marketed to anyone younger than a teen and are aimed more at the adult segment generally. Many popular video games are $50-70 and a lot are even rated mature and cannot be bought by those under 18. Loads of the board games I play take quite a bit of time to comprehend and understand -- they aren't like Sorry! (not that there's anything wrong if you play regular, family board games) and are hardly things I played as a kid. So acting as though it's stuff 'for kids' is just a tired argument. It's stuff made mostly for an adult market. Sure, kids play video games, but generally --- unless something just has phenomenal cross-market appeal (which is great and a sign of an impressive product! Kind of like how the Pixar movies are enjoyable to some adults, but not all kids' movies are) --- they play totally different video games than adults. 2
Woggle Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 I don't think games like GTA and Saints Row are intended for little kids.

And when you click on that link to gaming, it says: Gaming is the act of playing a game. Gaming may also refer to: Gambling, playing games of chance for money Playing a role-playing game, in which players assume fictional roles Playing a massively multiplayer online role-playing game Playing a tabletop game, any game played on a flat surface Playing a video game, an electronic game with a video interface Video game culture

Feelsgoodman Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 Im not trying to change anyone's mind here. If you think that playing World of Warcraft and reading comic books is a good lifestyle choice, it's your life. Just don't complain that you can't form a normal, adult relationship with your fellow travellers.
