Samantha16 Posted June 29, 2004 Posted June 29, 2004 My bf's getting house envy. He really wants to move out and build a home of his own. What's the best strategy for designing your own home? An internet site/house books/home shows/hiring somebody? If he's going to build, I want him to put a lot of thought into what his home will look like. Any ideas in the best way to go about planning and designing your home?
sportsloving Posted June 29, 2004 Posted June 29, 2004 There are lots of sites on the internet that show home designs and blue prints (some you can even buy ). And when we wanted ideas, we would view others' houses to see, taking a notebook and noting anything of interest. (I want a loft that over looks the living room, he wants a mud room off the kitchen). Then we would look over the sites and see if we found something that worked or didn't work ... we would note it. Some of the blue prints you can have customize for a bit more money. It really depends on who you are working with. There was one place in Texas that builds totally awesome and beautiful homes ... but they won't sell blue prints to anyone, nor will they let anyone use their prints outside of their area (now that one was a bummer ... LOL). Get the general idea of what you want (amazing how many choices you will get), and talk to a home builder, go to home shows (purty purty) and check out the web. When you get the basics down, you will probably want to hire someone to help with the overall designs ... so you know, the bathroom actually fits in the house and the garage doesn't end up in your bathroom My guy has been working with and drawing up blue prints since the beginning of time so we skipped hiring it out, lol, so if my living room ends up having no sky, I guess I can blame him . Good luck to you ... and have fun with it. I sure did!
Olivia_19742004 Posted June 29, 2004 Posted June 29, 2004 Check your local software store (Circuit City, Best Buy). There is an abundance of software available for designing a house. How do you think The Sims got started? Originally it was a home design software.
Author Samantha16 Posted June 30, 2004 Author Posted June 30, 2004 Cool, I didn't know that. But I don't have a circuit city or best buy around. Are those stores only in the states perhaps?
moimeme Posted June 30, 2004 Posted June 30, 2004 You can buy lots of software online. You can also check out CompuSmart or maybe try Staples or Office Depot. I think possibly Home Depot might even carry that sort of thing but you can always call and find out.
