I can't really see that it would impress women. In fact if anything, it kinda seems like a nice guy kind of thing to do.

Personally, I'd never try to be something I'm not to impress a woman, or to impress anyone.

as for SATC, its shallow and sex obsessed. nothing to learn from, or meaningful.

I understand that many women discovered the Rabbit vibrator after watching an episode. ;) That's more educational than watching, say, Steven Seagal beating up a bunch of terrorists, just to pick an example from the opposite end of the spectrum (ie, a guy-flick).

I LOVED Amelie!! One of the best movies ever.

Only "Chick Flicks" I can't stomach are the ones where it is NOTHING but drama - FAKE drama even. Some SATC was entertaining, but "WHERE THE HEART IS" was the end of it for me. Never again will I sit through someone's baggage and crappy life that ends up going nowhere just trying me to feel something for a bunch of pointless losers. That is not entertainment for me - that is watching someone else's therapy. ONLY excpetion is if my girl explains to me WHY she thinks it is good, and why she feels I would be enriched by its message. Then again, I don't generally date gals into Where the HEart is style movies. More like Terminator and Amelie :)

I love Amelie also.

I actually like watching chick flicks, but only if they are good or at least somewhat original.

Ummm, Shop Around the Corner comes to mind [it's from the '40's] and it's awesome.

SATC is nice to watch, though the only 'honest' characters seemed to be Samantha and Charlotte.

I actually think the title "chick flicks" or "rom coms" are kind of degrading to women and men alike. Because it's used to shun guys that like a more romantic/relationship focused movies and belittle things women can be into. There are no such silly names for movies men like. I wish these terms would go away.

There are some romantic movies I've enjoyed and some I haven't. Just like there are some really good action movies I've enjoyed and some I haven't.

What really bugs me about the movies though is that so many of the male leads are older then their female counterparts and it gives an unrealistic idea about women's age vs men. At a local winery around me they have movie night. I went to see a movie with some family and friends called "A Good Year", with Russell Crowe. In the movie, most of the female interests where younger. The main female actress was protrayed to be his same age. However, I knew that couldn't be right and went home and looked it up to discover that in real life she was actually 10 years younger then him. Pretty cheesy to protray someone as being the same age as the man when she is really a lot younger. I kept watching the movie thinking she couldn't possibly be the same age as him. This is really starting to bug me about movies. The lack of really good female characterization and the agism that is used against women.

Are you actually complaining about quality in Hollywood made films ?

I didn't see it that way at all. I've heard lots of complaints about all the shopping and sex but it was really a show about four realistic women trying to find happiness. Sharing the kind of friendship and respect we would all be lucky to have. It was amazing for it's time.

"Impress" girls by watching them? Only to whatever extent you consider showing my willingness to compromise on what we watched as an attempt at "impressing" a girl.

The way I look at it, my ex sat through "300". After that, she deserved a few nights where we watched what she wanted to watch.

I can say watching Gerard Butler half naked was not a hardship for me

Romantic comedies are not my thing, never had been, though I have seen a few that were at least amusing. Most aren't any worse than action movies that demand a romantic story attached to it -- all silly fluff, for the most part.

I don't like action or romance, really, unless it's done really well. I used to like horror/sci-fi, but haven't seen a good one of those for awhile, but then I don't get out much these days, lol.

Absolutely. People absorb media messages in all forms. The amount of older male leads with younger female ones speaks loudly about the worth Hollywood places on men over women. As a woman, I consider it an important social issue and one worth discussing.

DY,

It is an important social issue and is worth discussing. Mainstream media does affect how we look at ourselves and our relationships, I agree, but for all people, male, female, white, black, brown...

As an example, I remember when I got rid of my TV. It seemed silly at the time, but I had moved to a very expensive city as a student, and I decided to jettison all television and only got internet. I really did come to recognize that I saw myself in a less harsher light. I had stopped comparing myself (and others) to what I saw as the standard of beauty on TV and actually felt better about myself.

But, TV was probably the most intrusive medium about mainstream beauty. I never subscribed to any type of beauty or fashion magazine. I was more of a science and news type, though I wouldn't say I was a nerd. (Mainly because nerds would say I'm not a nerd.) :)

I know, I am one data point, but I just remember the experience well.

You are wasting your time, gl changing Hollywood.

Hollywood made some very nice movies, it's just that most of the stuff they put out is crap. Sifting for the good ones is worth it.

For good movies you need to look at independents or foreign ones.

I actually wrote something to throw against your feminist comments, but it's just not worth it. I don't have the stamina in me anymore.

I'm gonna leave you to your ... issues with this ghost you call patriarchy.

Life is too short to be spent in worthless fights like these.

PS: A good movie to watch with gf, Princess Mononoke or Howl's moving castle.

Sweet October is pretty awesome [not the remake].

I don't recall DY ever identifying herself as a feminist (or maybe I'm just late). Besides, I think she is right about a lot of what the media puts out there and I think it's perhaps a good idea for someone with the adequate power to create an industry to rival hollywood?? I would do it, in fact I would hope to get into a position to set something in motion some day.

P.S. Princess Mononoke is indeed a fantastic movie.

I don't mind some romantic comedies but I will not watch SATC and I certainly will never watch an Eat Pray Love kind of movie.

Rom Com isnt a bad term. Its simply an abbreviation for Romantic Comedy. Its no different from the words sitcom or dramedy.

I don't like abbreviations. LIke I get super annoyed when women (usually) use the word "preggers". Saying "Pregnant" is just as easy and it sounds silly to me to say "preggers". Which is much how I feel about "Rom Com". I think the abbreviation gives it a more foolish sound. But that's just me on that note.

Alma, I totally agree with what you said but whether tv or film is more of culprit, I don't really care. I think they both hugely play their role. And I think more often then not, women and people of ethnicty are belittled then white males. *Most* of the time, certainly not all the time. But in this case, the topic was specifically about female centric movies vs male centric which is why that was my main focus here.
