At what age do facial piercings stop looking age appropriate?

I have noticed even people over 40 have at least some kind of nose stud going on. I figured it was just a fad among the younger generation, but to be over 40 and having a nose ring....think that's age appropriate? Esp when trying to date someone?

I think people should be whoever they want to be. If a stud in the nose makes someone feel cute, more power to them!

On a personal level though, I am not a fan of facial piercings on ANYONE. I think everyone looks better without them.

I never found facial piercing to be appropriate in general.

Age Zero on up.

I think it only works if they are going for the goth or rocker image.

I don't think there's any age where it looks 'inappropriate', it's not like when people hit a certain age they should always look boring/respectable enough to go to a job interview.

But, I don't think they look good on anyone at any age, they look pretty ugly to me.

Depends on image. Some can rock it well, even as they age, and some cant.

I had a monroe piercing and nose ring for 5 years and took them out when I turned 22. Even as a huge fan of facial piercings, I had always planned to take them out so as not to receive "looks" in the workplace or be discriminated against while looking for work. I'm a grad student now, and I feel like having facial piercings would just be a crutch for me. I personally dont' find piercings attractive on anyone over the age of 30.

I was not under the impression that people in western culture got facial piercings to look "appropriate"

It was a fad when I was young....20 years ago.

I have one facial piercing that I have had for many years. I am 40 now and it is still there... I have thought about taking it out but my husband says I should keep it, it looks good and it is part of me. True, I've had it so long it would be weird to not have it. (It's a Monroe piercing... I don't think they are even popular anymore, but I'm kinda attached to it, because I've had it sooo long and would definitely look different without it and it is a small blue stud.)

I have pics, but you have to add me as a contact.

There is no such thing as age appropriateness when it comes to body modification. Look at the kayan lahwi for example.

As long as it's a dollar sign, no one is too old IMO.

I want to ask you a question, D, a personal one, is that ok?

The folks that like piercings are the same tattoo loving people.

The piercings make me think of the tribes of indigenous people that originally lived in the planet hundreds of years ago. I associate the piercings with being primitive.

And... what is wrong with that? ;)

Whats wrong with paying respect to our roots?

I know several people who get tattoos and get pierced because it speaks to their heritage.

Primitive doesnt have to mean something is negative like you are trying to paint it.

All ethnic groups painted their skin or did piercings a long time ago. So I guess you could call it being retro or old fashioned.

I also note that some women only have one piercing in the earlobe whereas others have 8-9 piercings in the ears.

^I wouldnt call it retro or old fashioned. Id call it paying respect to ones culture if thats the reason one does it. Id call it what it actually is. Sometimes its a fashion statement as well, or sometimes its a tribute. Such is the case with my tattoos. They are tributes to my musical influences.

I'd rather spend my money on other things.

While piercings aren't my thing, they're fine for others. Age is less relevant than style or culture.

Most people aren't doing it for this reason though, they are doing it because it's trendy.

Imagine how those piercings are going to look when the person is old and wrinkled? Other old people with piercings are going to say "I see you were an idiot like me when you were younger too."

My mother in law has a nose stud, so does my wife (although she's not 40 haha). It's kind of a cultural thing. Doesn't look bad at all.

Piercings in general, save for the ears (and the lobes not the cartilage) aren't attractive on men or women. I never had an urge to get anything pierced, and younger friends who have gotten them said that they got something on their face pierced and they said they looked like hookers. I have to admit, I agree.
