My thoughts exactly. I never understood the McD popularity. It's not THAT cheap - most Asian places have much better food for the same price and don't feel so.. tacky. They're also way healthier. Sure it's convenient if you want a drive-through, but that really isn't what dates are supposed to be about, is it?

Oh wait.

Here's a novel suggestion for the OP: Cook a meal for her. Not only will most decent women be blown away, but it costs LESS than McDs! What a saver. ;)

Definitely disagree that Asian restaurants are healthy. I'm chummy with a health inspector in Cook County, Illinois and he said Asian restaurants routinely have the worst health standards. He showed me the violations and they are appalling: ants in the rice, jars of oil left open overnight, and one Vietnamese place was found to cook their shrimp in toilets. Even when Asian food is prepared healthy, it is always greasy as hell. I always feel as if I've eaten a giant bowl of grease after I've eaten Asian food.

Everyone knows places like China, Vietnam, Malaysia, and other Asian countries have poor health standards: they don't sanitize their hands, food, and utensils properly; they don't cook the food properly; and they don't store it properly. China has the worst health standards of any industrialized nation. So it's not surprising the people bring these poor standards to the States. I've heard many stories about US servicemen being stationed in Asian countries and getting sick as hell from the local food.

I hope for the OP's sake, this happens to him - that's his date-nite well and truly sorted, then!

That's on the local inspection, then. If they do their job, all restaurants in the area should have equivalent levels of hygiene - ie they have to shape up or ship out. If they don't, I'd be wary of eating out at all, or at least I'd do so knowing the possible consequences.

If you find all Asian food 'always greasy as hell', you must not have tried much of it. It depends entirely on what you order. There is always the option of white rice and steamed chicken, or sushi, or pho noodles in soup, or.. really, I could go on. You can choose to eat greasy stuff or less greasy stuff. That is the case in MOST restaurants - all the way up to fine dining Italian, French, or German ones. On the other hand, virtually everything in McDs is greasy except their salads, which are horribly unappetizing. Not much choice there.

Again, that's on the local enforcement. If it doesn't do its job, it doesn't matter what the restaurant is, you're going to get unhygienic food. Also, it's incredibly rare for a genuine street hawker from those countries to be able to migrate out. The Asians you see are mostly educated people who were not street hawkers back home, or were born in the USA. Apples to oranges.
