Have any of you had a vow renewal? Who did you invite? We were thinking of keeping it small. Max of 20 people. At first we wanted a big bash since there were a lot of problems at our wedding, but I think we can avoid those problems with fewer guests and save money too.

With all the problems you have been having is this such a good idea? Vow renewal should be a celebration of a good marriage lasting and not a band aid for a marriage in trouble.

I would have imagined myself getting married in a small intimate setting and then a big reception for the vow renewal in a few years when we can afford it, so I suppose the opposite is also acceptable.

Though I would think vow renewals should be for bigger milestones...10, 15, 20, 30, 50... you know, years.

Yeah, that's why we're keeping it small. We're also graduating college that month, so the vow renewal is mostly about celebrating all the hurdles we've gone through. (We were both young when we met and basically had families whom were never there for us, financially or emotionally.) We've had a lot of problems in our relationship, but I often find myself thinking I couldn't imagine being with anyone else. His family never even thought he'd go back to school. So the vow renewal would be about celebrating us, our accomplishments and the obstacles. I've read that couples sometimes renew vows after infidelity issues or after overcoming a hardship in the relationship and wanting to recommit to each other. I felt so many other things prevented me from feeling that way at our wedding that I want to reaffirm our vows.

How does your husband feel about it?

He's definitely for it. He wants to keep it small. I think a lot of times at weddings, the couple is so rushed up in the moment, you forget what that day is really about. In that case it didn't feel like we were able to have a special day for the two of us to really focus on one another rather than having to rush around because guests were leaving early.

I think if you are doing a vow renewal because of infidelity then it should just be between each other.. no guests.

If you are doing it because you just love each other so much and want to reaffirm your vows then I would keep it to only your closet friends..

I would think only your closet friends would want to come.

Good Luck and may you both have many years in front of you.

Definitely not infidelity for us, but for hardships as well as accomplishments. We'll have no more than 20 guests. :o
