Qqqwww Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 I am fluent in French and I was just wondering - do you guys think the guy I'm texting find it attractive if occasionally I texted him something sweet or romantic in French, or would it just be awkward because then he'd be like, "what does this mean"?
CarrieT Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 My BF speaks nine languages and it is a HUGE turn-on for me -- especially when he whispers something in my ear that sounds so sexy and I don't know what it means.
january2011 Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Try it. I think most people would like it, except for those rare few who don't like anything 'foreign'.
SmileFace Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 My BF speaks nine languages and it is a HUGE turn-on for me -- especially when he whispers something in my ear that sounds so sexy and I don't know what it means. Nine......wow And I agree it is sweet. A old friend of mine use to call me "my sweet" in his first language but never would tell me what it meant. I found it wonderful. However it may be missed over text.

Yeah I'm calling bull**** on that. Op, French is so much better spoken to your amour than written could ever be.
yongyong Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 We all know, in America, speaking french is considered 'upper class' I don't have to tell you about Spanish since you know it. anyways, how about saying something sweet when you are looking at him. I am sure any french word should sound very romantic even when you call him a douchebag lol
Author Qqqwww Posted May 16, 2012 Author Posted May 16, 2012 Thanks for the help! And haha, douchebag...it probably would!
CarrieT Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Yeah I'm calling bull**** on that. No b***t -- He and his whole family have the foreign language gene (his 14-year old son speaks twelve languages). My BF's medical practice necessitates him speaking five (English, Spanish, Tagalog, Italian, and Japanese) of the nine languages as San Francisco is culturally diverse. He routinely lectures in Europe which requires he speak French, Italian, Swedish, and German.
yongyong Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 It will very turn me on if she starts shouting in french when we are doing hmhm...you know "Oh oui, plus fort!" Thanks for the help! And haha, douchebag...it probably would!
tigressA Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 I agree with those who say speaking it will be so much better than writing it.
kaylan Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Speak in french to him...writing it would be weird. Actually using your voice would be very sexy. 1
Pierre Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 My BF speaks nine languages and it is a HUGE turn-on for me -- especially when he whispers something in my ear that sounds so sexy and I don't know what it means. I doubt it! He probably knows 3-4 languages quite well, and some understanding of others. He likes to inflate his credentials. For example if you know 1-2 romance languages you can easily have an understanding of the three other romance languages.
Disenchantedly Yours Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 I am fluent in French and I was just wondering - do you guys think the guy I'm texting find it attractive if occasionally I texted him something sweet or romantic in French, or would it just be awkward because then he'd be like, "what does this mean"? Maybe I am wrong here but that sounds like something a woman would enjoy more then a man. A woman would be all like, "omg what does that mean, let me google it." A man, if he doesn't speak French might say, "What the heck." Then go to google the latest sport scores. I'm not sure though since I'm not a man. We need more men to respond. I think your intention is sweet. Just not sure if it works on guys like that stuff works on women. I would whisper hot French phrases in his ear before you texted it. 1
NeverDated Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 No b***t -- He and his whole family have the foreign language gene (his 14-year old son speaks twelve languages). My BF's medical practice necessitates him speaking five (English, Spanish, Tagalog, Italian, and Japanese) of the nine languages as San Francisco is culturally diverse. He routinely lectures in Europe which requires he speak French, Italian, Swedish, and German. I buy it. I had a teacher in high school who "picked up" a language in a month for an exchange student. Although he didn't have the vocabulary to be considered "fluent", but he got the important parts (grammar rules and pronunciation) down within a week, and built his vocabulary as he went. He was technically fluent in about 15 languages because his brain was just wired for it. On topic, OP, I think speaking would be better than texting. Foreign languages lose a lot of their allure in text.
Pierre Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 He routinely lectures in Europe which requires he speak French, Italian, Swedish, and German. The lingua franca in Europe is English. No need to lecture in all those languages. Educated Europeans know English as a second language. I think he is pulling the wool over your eyes. 1
d'Arthez Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Polylingualism is relatively common. There are people out there who can speak and write 50+ languages fluently.
Emilia Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 The lingua franca in Europe is English. No need to lecture in all those languages. Educated Europeans know English as a second language. I think he is pulling the wool over your eyes. I sort of thought that too. Scandinavians and Germans speak English well although Italians and French don't necessarily.
Pierre Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Some people claim to "speak" languages ,when in reality they know only a few words. To someone who hasn't a word of that language...they seem fluent.I had a german girlfriend who used to text me occasionally in english and German......it was sweet AND educational.....AND it improved my German. She also liked me to say a few things in Deutsch when we were doing the Wild Thing. Carrie's SO could very well speak 9 languages....some people have a knack for it(I don't,I have to rely on hard work). The funny thing is,the more languages you speak, the easier it gets.Once you have 3 languages apparently, the rest come easy. As for English being the lingua franca in Europe, not necessarily so.The older generation in Eastern Europe will probably not have a word of it,as they learned Russian in school.Even in The Netherlands, outside the big cities, its sometimes difficult to find anyone to speak English(especially when you need them to) My ex-gf in Germany, although she was fluent in English, her parents or sisters hadn't a word of it. English is the lingua franca of the educated class. You will not find a well educated person that does not speak English.
Emilia Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 As for English being the lingua franca in Europe, not necessarily so. The poster said her boyfriend lectured in several languages in Europe. There is no need because in the academic community most people will understand English even if they don't speak it because a lot of the papers are published in English. Learning it is a must.

And what the heck is Tagalog?! I doubt it! He probably knows 3-4 languages quite well, and some understanding of others. He likes to inflate his credentials. For example if you know 1-2 romance languages you can easily have an understanding of the three other romance languages. I take it you mean romanic languages, in contrast to germanic languages? It's not that simple. Portuguese and Spanish? Quite similar so basically it's a 2 in 1 deal. Now comparing one of these with Italian or French? While you can definetly understand some words and simple phrases, i very much doubt you are able to communicate with it. Edited May 16, 2012 by Dafa

Romanic or romance same thing. If you know Spanish you can easily master French, Portuguese, Italian, and Romanian with a bit or work. That is five languages right there. Add English and you already have six.
irin Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 its possible for someone to speak 9 languages, i spoke 3 at 7 years old, now i know 5 fluently and learning 3 more, i hope one day ill reach 10. by fluently i mean i have managed to fool native speaker of those language thinking that i was also a native speaker! not just a few words. to answer you question op. i don't know about sexy! but guys are usually impressed! 1
CarrieT Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 A 14 year old kid speaking 12 languages?! You should give him a mensa application. He is an idiot/savant - doing graduate level calculus and physics but not socially functioning. The "Net Nanny" his father uses to screen what websites he goes to shows 80% Chinese sites involving mathematics. What is Tagalog? The language spoken in the Philippines. Big in San Francisco.
Negative Nancy Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 French is the gayest sounding language I've ever heard, especially when men speak it. Such a turn-off.
