My question is, why is there so much talk of bieng SOL or whatever from the short men and tall women?

Two words: Confirmation Bias.

(The first few sentences on Wikipedia explain this better than I could, for anyone who doesn't know what it is.)

Is it confirmation bias to believe that most women prefer average height to tall men?

Posted

I don't get it either, OP. I'm 5'8' and my ex was 5'5", 5'6". I remember slouching when we first met because I was afraid he was one of the ones who would just say, "Wow, you're great, but too tall. Sorry." I know he would have preferred to be taller, and for me to be shorter, but that's just not how it worked out. It never bothered me. It's not even something I really notice. DRASTICALLY shorter? That might be a little odd to get comfortable with at first, but that would never bother me.

I think anything over 6' is too tall for me. But if I met a great guy and he was taller than that, I'd make it work.

And that's the real reason he is your ex.

Ouji-chan, that made even me roll my eyes

No. Confirmation bias is when you go out and all you (think you) see are hot girls with tall guys, and short guys who are either single or with ugly girls, and you conclude that this proves your belief (and justifies the chip on your shoulder).

Ah, I got it. I'll keep in mind what I think I see.

It wasn't that much as a lot of cardio seemed counterproductive.

The guys I knew who did the muscle-building routine swore by a mix of cardio and weights/calisthenics. They said you need a good mix of both because they synergize with each other and produce better results than just sticking to one.

If your aim is to buff up, losing fat generally isn't counterproductive.

Running, sprints, cycling, bodyweight cardio such as mountain climbers, burpees etc. Even the Rob Brinded stretches from Code Of The Natural. They are all fat burners and improve your overall movement, posture and everything.

There's a ton of info out there to help really, you have to be completely sure before you say it's counterproductive.

I guess he put a little too much priority on upping his weight and bulking up, so cardio 'seems' counterproductive since people do it to burn fat. But the thing is, almost anyone can be 200 lbs if he or she really wants. Being 200 lbs with all the added weight being muscle is the tricky part. The women who want 'well-built guys' are generally thinking about the latter.

My only experience has been with Asian guys, so YMMV, but 160 lbs really isn't that low at 5'6", so it would not hurt to lose fat via cardio if you want to get fitter.

I tend to find that functional muscle is more attractive to girls than straight up bulk. Defined muscles, with a slight V-taper. Like the Adonis Code I was talking about the other day. Apparently, Michaelangelo's David is sculpted exactly to the measurement ratio of the Adonis Code and happens to be one of the most reverred piece of art by a lot of women (allegedly).

I'm already at like 6 3 and 215 lbs, so I only really need to do a little bulking, more I have to do toning, so much of my workouts is going to be high intensity, because I have way too much fat for my own personal liking.

Definitely is the case for me. :) Lucky for me, I guess, since there are very few East Asian guys with huge bulk, heh. However, some women who say they want 'well-built men' seem to prefer The Rock size - it all varies, really.

My opinions on a guy's muscle is usually most greatly influenced by what they can actually DO. As long as he can pick me up effortlessly and swing me around, all's good.

Well, to me The Rock isn't THAT bulky. He was much bulkier before (The Sideburns and $800 jacket era ). But that's his natural build apparently, he has good genes it seems.

I have a large frame, and I suspect that naturally I would be a little bulkier than most, but I also want to be very fast and agile aswell. I want to do proper training, to reach like Athlete/Warrior level, it's more a personal quest for me. I definitely don't want meaningless bulk, I want functional muscles for strength.

The Rock is pretty much unachievable for most East Asians. I also happen to find Jet Li sexier. :p

it's more a matter of all the inconvenient things that Elswyth mentioned. I would have to crane my neck to talk to him, he would have to kneel down to kiss me, I can't even imagine how sex would work...seems like the whole relationship would be awkward and uncomfortable. But I'm glad it works for you!

Yep, funny isn't it, how the length of your body doesn't really matter when you're having sex (unless you want to enjoy sex exclusively standing up...which as you said, to each its own).

Eh, I guess if you want to include those "inconveniences" in criteria for dating someone, it's a valid point. When they're already lovers or life partners you stop feeling that stretch in your neck and find what's comfortable and make it work. :o:p We have more fun making a joke out of our height differences and embracing it than making it a hassle; kinda makes it more fun to deal with.

I don't think 'preferences' and 'criteria' are the same thing - and even if her criteria IS men below 6', so what? Not any worse than the women who want a man above 6'. Nobody's knocking you for being with your man, hon. Different strokes for different folks.

Jet Li has a great build for his size. It's functional, he's incredibly agile and his movement is super fluid, probably from all that freeform Wushu as a kid. Guys go for bulk straight away because they think bigger is better sometimes. Jet Li is a prime example to me of why it's better to go for functional rather than huge.

This is the type of build my size would suit perfectly

Not too bulky for my frame, functional, strong, high capacity for speed, agility, flexibility and posture. That's my target right now.

Yep, agree completely. :) SD has been saying he will never be buff because of his natural size, but that simply isn't true. It isn't all about size (well, to some of us, anyway).

Wow, incidentally Jet Li is also 5'6" and weighs 145 lbs.

Also, I think the picture you linked is pretty sweet! :) Kudos for aiming high, dude.

He's looking at it all wrong, he seems like he's stocky for his size, like my brother is. My brother has always been active and burns fat regularly. Moving around a lot = cardio. So lots of running and bodyweight stuff burns fat. He doesn't need to be super buff or huge, he just needs to find the right workout and structure it accordingly.

 well there you go. It's certainly not about size, it's how you rock it.

And yeah, ever since Blood and Bone, Michael Jai White has been my benchmark for a while. I also want to get as good a martial artist as him as well, just need to find the right art.

I tryed telling him that also its all mental first and just believing in yourself and get that motivation up. I never thought that way as I told him i've been training since age 17 and i started out extremely skinny 5/7 about 135. I'm currently 205 now. It takes along time but if you work hard you'll get it. Its also built up alot of confidence in me to suceed in other areas of my life. Sd needs to make changes in his life even if he starts small and just gets in better physical shape it will help him tremendously.

Damn, that's crazy.

When I was seriously working out and trying to gain weight, the highest I got was 160 and I'm 5'6. And I had more fat than I wanted.

I can't even imagine being 20 lbs heavier, let alone 40.

What bodytype are you? I'm an ectomorph.

When I started training I was about 135 pounds. So yes ectomorph.
