Sundaymorning Posted June 23, 2004 Posted June 23, 2004 how does one have an internet boyfriend with it being healthy? especially if you are 14 like your sn says you are, you could be getting into some danger and are too young to realize it.
morrigan Posted June 23, 2004 Posted June 23, 2004 I don't consider dating anyone over the internet to be a good idea. You can meet a lot of nice people on the Internet, but there are also people whose motives for wanting to "date" someone are not well intentioned. Pedophiles and sex criminals have used the Internet to find people to meet. Look up the case of John Robinson, a man who murdered several women after meeting them via the Internet and arranging them to visit him. Anyone can lie about their age, their marital status, their criminal record--the only thing you know about them is what they tell you online. There have been numerous cases of people posting fake photos, or pretending to be teenagers when they are in reality much older. It doesn't matter whether you are 14 or 44, a lot of people have been manipulated by someone who pretended to be something that they weren't. Don't ever give anyone your real name, a photo, or the town and state where you live. Keep contact limited to emails. If you're a teenager, I'd say to stick to dating people in your local area, someone your friends know.
Rotagitsni Posted June 23, 2004 Posted June 23, 2004 I don't know about that. I agree that there is danger in meeting strangers on the internet. But I've heard some success stories from it as well. But not from someone who is 14. Personally I have known someone for quite some time that I've never met, but I plan to meet. We talk on the phone (mobile to mobile, so free long distance) and use webcam quite often. It's been nearly 5 years. We click very well (better than anyone I know in life) and quite honestly I could see myself in a long term relationship with this person, should it work out. Although we have never "met," we know more about each other than basically, anyone. But I wouldn't call them a boyfriend or girlfriend. That would be like a long distance relationship on crack. But I am inspired by a friend of mine's cousin. I live in Texas and my friend's cousin met someone from Georgia, and soon after they met, they ran off together, if you can believe that lol
