dasein Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 Just a sociological question. TV is flooded with reality relationship shows today, from Jersey Shore to Beverly Housewives to Bad Girls to Kardashians to the stuff on MTV. Do any reality shows you see reflect the social circle you date and socialize in? If not, where does the audience for this stuff come from in your opinion? Do you or any friends watch them?
mesmerized Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 I have watched some reality shows for the entertainment of them. They don't really reperesent me or my friends lives and I find most of the people in them utterly stupid and that's probably why they can be entertaining. You get to laugh at people's stupidity.
Jane2011 Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 Interesting thread topic. No, none of those shows represent my social or dating circle. I can't think of any shows that do.
Jane2011 Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 Also, I've never watched any of those shows except for maybe four episodes of Jersey Shore. Thought it was sooo stupid.
january2011 Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 Maybe The Apprentice. Otherwise, none of them come close. But then I don't watch much TV when it's broadcast, let alone reality TV - I normally just catch up with specific shows via online streaming services. My guess is that for many people, reality tv is a guilty pleasure. It's car crash TV - horrible but you can't tear your eyes away. Don't know where the audience comes from. Perhaps from people who just want some light entertainment that doesn't require them to think too much.
Ursa Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 I don't watch any of those shows, so I guess I can't say with complete certainty--but from what side media coverage I've seen of them or references I've heard made, etc., I'd say no, none of those shows in any ways reflects the circles I move in. I know a couple of people who watched the first season of Jersey Shore as a gross-out guilty pleasure, but I think they got bored of it before too long--and a couple others from work or the gym who sometimes talk about The Bachelor or the Real Housewives shows. I don't think any of my close friends watch any of them regularly, I tend to hang out with people who are more into sci fi, the BBC, HBO and PBS, etc. I saw one episode of one of the Real Housewives recently while I was at the gym, they were playing it above the treadmills. Some plastic pregnant lady was getting married and everything was very, very staged and histrionic and kind of ridiculous. I have a hard time imagining it being a reflection of anyone's reality. I'm probably not the best sample of American culture, however. I don't even bother with a regular TV connection or cable, I just do streaming Netflix through my Wii. 1
ThaWholigan Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 Every reality show you can think of is to an extent reflective in my dating pool, which is a tad unfortunate. TOWIE girls etc. Lot of Love and Hip Hop girls around where I live too . Few Kardashian-lites walking around, but their not that common.
